Publisher's summary

My little boy’s room was empty, his bed neatly made. Alarm bells should have rung immediately. Then the knock on the door came. All I remember is a thick fog wrapping itself tightly around me. This couldn’t be happening to us.

Three years ago, nurse Zoe's son Ethan was found drowned in a muddy river by their home, along with his best friend, Josh. With no witnesses, their deaths were ruled a tragic accident.

Heartbroken, Zoe and her family move away from her home. They’re just beginning to get back to some kind of normality when, out of the blue, Zoe receives an anonymous email: "You need to find out the truth about what happened to your son. Don’t let this rest. Don’t believe the lie."

Shaken, Zoe starts an obsessive hunt for the truth. But why is her husband so reluctant to help? And why is Josh’s mother so determined not to believe her?

Not as advertised

The story is weak and not challenging. I’m wondering why Jake and Liam and Adrian all have British lower class accents. Surely not all of the men are “cockney”!
Very very bad.

The Warning

Very good book. Slow to start but couldn't stop about half way through. Unseen ending

So many twists!

I LOVE the twists in this book. As soon as I thought I had it all figured out, who did what, another twist came and made me doubt myself. This is an exciting book and well worth the read/listen.

Not Terrible but not great.

This book was so so. It did keep me interested though there were times when it dragged and the narrator sounded like she was reading. The story was okay. So I gave it 3 stars because over all it was just ok.

Worth the listen

Very clever story and I didn't see most of it coming. At points some things fell a bit too neatly into place, but overall this was a solid listen.

Speed it up

Story is ok but if played at set speed it drags. Go wth 1.2x to make it sound better

Questionable

I actually liked most parts of this book, and I'll start with the positives: The narration was excellent. Both narrators gave a strong performance and this was a captivating story to listen. The mystery kept me intrigued to the last minute, and the storytelling was fluent. But...

I have a real issue with the storyline between Harley and Scott. Harley was groomed by a sick man more than twice his age at an age when he clearly wasn't mature enough to know what was up. Whether Harley was gay, straight or bisexual - or any other sexuality - has absolutely nothing to do with the fact he was sexually abused by a predatory person. The way this story somehow managed to twist things, it gave the impression that the "relationship" was something other than abuse. None of it was okay. It wouldn't be okay with a smaller age difference, but especially like this. Also, trying to blur the lines between consensual sex between two adults and sexual predators abusing teenagers is disturbing. The trope of gay men being predators is harmful, and it saddens me that this otherwise excellent book was taken to that direction.

None of us are perfect

We all make mistakes, regardless of age or background, but I did not see the final resolution coming. It changed my view of two characters.
