Publisher's summary

A wildly funny, irreverent tale of murder, mayhem, and the mob.

When up-and-coming chef Tommy Pagana settles for a less than glamorous stint at his uncle's restaurant in Manhattan's Little Italy, he unwittingly finds himself a partner in big-time crime. And when the mob decides to use the kitchen for a murder, nothing Tommy learned in cooking school has prepared him for what happens next. With the FBI on one side and his eccentric wise guy superiors on the other, Tommy has to struggle to do right by his conscience and avoid getting killed in the meantime....

Stuffed with charming characters and peppered with Bourdain's wry humor, Bone in the Throat is one satisfying feast of a novel.

Very unique culinary-based mafia story

I highly enjoyed this story. The characters were well written and the story was different than what I'm used to. It was about a mafia family with one good egg on the tree who turned out to be a sous chef and the hero of the story. It brought me back the days where I was s cook. I learned new ways to use kitchen utensils for self defense or for murders. I also learned a bit about past drug purchasing methods in NY city. Not a book for people who can't tolerate offensive language or gory imagery. Bourdain was a much better writer than I predicted he would be.

His fiction has such an element of reality, from experience. It really keeps the reader/listener rooting for the "Boys"!

Anthony is the Quentin Tarantino off foodies...?

What a weird and awesome pairing of subjects. Much like Bourdain himself... Never sugar coated, from classy snobbery to seedy underbelly...

Amazing book read by the best narrator

When you listen lots of audio books they start to look the same. Well not this one. A truly enjoyable and memorable mafia story with interesting characters and the unique setting. Would make a great movie or theatre play.
I could not believe that it was read by only one narrator. It sounded like an audio drama. Kaleo Griffith moved flawlessly from one voice to another. Even female voices sounded authentic. His accents were perfect. An outstanding performance! I have never heard this narrator before, but would certainly look for him in the future.

Not at all the “wildly funny” tale as advertised

From the publisher’s summary, I thought I’d be getting a dark-mafia comedy along the lines of The Whole Nine Yards or The Freshman (with Brando and Broderick). Instead, it was like The Sopranos, if it was told from the point of view of a wannabe made-man’s nephew who works as a chef trying to keep his head down and his life away from the mob.

The summary claims this is a “wildly funny, irreverent tale of murder, mayhem, and the mob.” This was not funny at all, unless your idea of humor includes mob violence (knee capping, faces into meat grinders, cherry bombs in mouths), drugs (from seedy dens to addiction), and detailed explanations about the restaurant business.

The narrator embraced mafia accents and F bomb-laden writing with gusto. Unfortunately, all that did was further repel me from this book. This was not the “wildly funny, irreverent” story I was looking for.

Christ that was painful to listen to

Why do do these readers insist on trying to voice each unique character?!?! JUST READ THE DAMN BOOK
