Story
We had 20 short years of peace. Twenty years to put worlds back together. Twenty years for Captain Vin Husher to convince us the aliens would return. We didn’t listen. Warmonger, we called him. Washed up, we called him. But now, the enemy has returned, with high-tech weaponry well beyond anything of which humanity has dreamed. If Husher and his ragtag crew can’t manage to stop them, they will smash us.

Captain Keyes is loved by the public but hated by Command. He captains the UHS Providence, an aging supercarrier and the last human ship not dependent on dark tech - technology humanity has used to rule over the galaxy since barely defeating the Ixa in the First Galactic War. Dominance has come at a cost. Over the decades, old allies have grown resentful, and when dark tech itself fails, Captain Keyes’ predictions start coming true: those old allies are now enemies.

Story
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Story
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

The Hundred Worlds have withstood invasion by the relentless Hok for decades. The human worlds are strong, but the Hok have the resources of a thousand planets behind them, and their fleets attack in endless waves. The long war has transformed the Hundred Worlds into heavily fortified star systems. Their economies are geared for military output, and they raise specialized soldiers to save our species. Assault Captain Derek Straker is one such man among many.

Publisher's Summary
Humanity is tired of losing. Enter the mech.
Jake Price has always dreamed of joining the Darkstream military like his father before him. When he’s told his gaming scores are good enough to qualify him for a brand-new training program designed to find recruits talented enough to pilot humanity’s first mechs, he can hardly believe it.
He’s right to be doubtful. There are hundreds of other recruits competing for the same eight jobs, and they’re all as skilled as he is. Worse, the training instructor is an unhinged chief with a particular dislike for Jake.
But Jake refuses to give up, refuses to wash out, because humanity is facing its greatest threat yet. If someone doesn’t step up, it could all be over for the human species.

Save yourself the time.
The story is sub par. It's break points are jarring. It's written as four books but each book ends at a fairly abitrary point. The structure of book seems like the author wrote one book and split it up. The conclusion is really weak and rushed with the last 30 minutes being packed with would be cliff hangers that just fall short. The characters are really one dimensional. You will pick up who the fodder characters are in minutes because they have virtually no characterization. Overall I would avoid this book. Narrator does a good job bringing some joy to a pretty bad book.

Mostly flash but still fun
I’m a big fan of mech shows and I’ve been wanting an author to tackle mechs in more sci books. I feel like it’s a genre that deserves to be explored more. That being said this is a nice step but in the end not what o wanted.
The science just didn’t feel believable and would take my out of my immersion. That being said I had plenty of fun and for one credit it was a decent investment

For fans of halo and mass effect
I received this book as a promo
Going through my Audible account I realized that I had not reviewed this promo copy, so here it is several months later and off the top of my head
I have read this author in the past. several books from each of his other trilogies and really love those series. This is probably my least favourite of all his series. There’s nothing wrong with it, per se, I just prefer the space exploration side of his writing. With this book you get four novels which I felt actually made the story too long. You don’t have to read them all in one sitting but the first couple of novels end very abruptly it’s almost as if it’s the end of a chapter and not the end of a book.
All the stories are very fast pace read with interesting characters and tons of action. I have always found Scott universe to be well thought out and enjoyable. All of his book exist in the same universe and often crisscross characters from different series . If you are someone who loves reading the halo novels his books are definitely up your alley, although I am would recommend reading his other series (super carriers) first to get a better idea of the world these characters inhabit
The narration is excellent with each character getting their own unique voice and personality.
Getting four novels for one credit you can’t really go wrong
I would say this book is worth one of your hard-earned credits

Pretty good but got a bit long in the tooth
I couch this review with the fact that I finished the entire main story first so, perhaps if I had jumped over to the mech wars at the right time (somewhere in the middle of the main story) it would have been a better experience. As it is though, I just thought the series as a whole was fine but the Quatro seemed a bit 2 dimensional actually most characters just seemed to lack some of the depth I felt we got from the main series.

Impressive storytelling
I love mech and space warfare. I guess I am not alone either. This story arc is proof. The author has done an incredible job creating a plausible universe and excellent, while somewhat flawed characters. Grouping primary characters helps the reader keep up with where each of the groups are during scene changes. The narration was excellent with enough voices to avoid confusion. Well done all.

Decent Sci-Fi
Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this title in return for an unbiased review.
I thought this series was decent sci-fi. Definitely not terrible, but not amazing, kind of average.
Narration:
It had a little bit of white noise in the audio which was noticeable at the start but did not bother me too much as the books went on. The narrator did a good job, was easy to listen to, and I always knew which person he was voicing. He is not among the top narrators, but definitely not on the bottom. I quite enjoyed him.
Book:
As far as the books go my biggest complaint is that it is advertised as four books when in reality it is one book in four parts. I really enjoyed the Mechs and watching what their capabilities were. There were no major plot twists, I enjoyed the little bits of world-building that were in the book.
It goes on the list of books that I could read again if I'm in the mood for some generic sci-fi.

repetitive action
repetitive story with a lack of emotional link to contents or characters. found that it easily altered the characters personality to push story line ideas that in the big picture didn't change much other than allowing for the repetitive battles to follow the same stages of story as the previous battle, normally in the same location.
I listened to the end as I felt the story did have potential to go somewhere interesting, but in the end I was left disappointed with nothing feeling like it was resolved or that the characters had grown or developed in a way that made me care about their journey. The performance was good & well read but the story failed to draw me in.

Great series - good value
Personal taste can be fickle but I’m surprised by the negative reviews on here. I think the plot and characters are well drawn and I love the mini-series approach that bundles novels together. The universe Bartlett has created is well realised. I have enjoyed quite a few books now and I’d happily recommend these to anyone.

Meh!
If you love epic sci-fi space opera, then please avoid this book. Purchased the full editors pack and gave up 15 chapters in! The characters are weak and mostly annoying. They make huge and sometimes random leaps / conclusions just to further the plot, which itself is just boring and 1 dimensional. And don’t get me started on the internal monologues, which will certainly get on your nerves after about 5 mins. Mark Boyett does his best with the material he has, but just can’t bring the characters to life.

Not worth the torture
Scott Bartlett would have to be top 5 worst writer of all time. All his story's are the same and to make it even worse not ONE charter is like able. All the bad guys are assholes and all the good guys are just as much if not more of an asshole. There is absolutely nothing redeemable in his story telling.
