Publisher's Summary

An alien-infested colony. A trapped platoon. The one man who will stop at nothing to lead his unit to safety.

Rade Galaal and his team of special operators are deployed to a colony under attack by a strange new alien race. Their mission: find the extraterrestrial base and destroy it.

The operation should be easy, given that his men pilot Brigand mechs: massive, 25-foot-tall war machines armed to the teeth with electrolasers, rockets, incendiary throwers, and more.

But it's not easy. Rade and his team soon find themselves in over their heads.

Surrounded by an entire world of enraged aliens, they must rely on their wits, their training, and their mechs to survive.

Because their only way out is each other.

A bag of clichés

I don't care who you are, this is not the book for you.
Of the many characters, you won't find one that you will like. The ones that aren't boring are so stock you will immediately know everything about them.
Every line of dialog is either macho posturing or gracelesses info dumps. It's like your most annoying male friend from high school got mixed with an NPC from a video game tutorial.
The plot is impossible to care about when it is not utterly predictable.
DO NOT READ!

barely got through it

let me start off by saying I am a major procrastinator and usually play computer games while I listen to audiobooks. let that speak to you about how large the stupid has to be for me to even care to pause my game.

now that is out of the way after listening to 4 different parts of this story I had to pause everything and think to myself "what the actual f***". the plot was so incredulous I had to actually stop what I was doing and listen to the chapter again to be sure I wasn't imagining the level of stupid I just listened to. I won't spoil the plot for you but the plot holes in this book are larger than a carrier class starship.
The first 1:45:00 literally NOTHING HAPPENED. just dialogue and not the world building kind. then they get separated from command and find an alien creature by the name arcanist more chapters and chapters of dialogue and later was my first "wtf the author of this book can't be serious" moments.
overall the dialogue is at a middle school level the action scenes are stale, the WHOLE PLOT IS ABSURD! if this book was written to happen in a "realistic" military environment this book would not have been written literally. that's how stupid the MC and big the plot holes needed for this book to work is.

Mech The Ultimate Mech Book

I bought this to finish my collection of Rade Galaal books and Audible audio. I bought this, along with Mech 2, and 3, because I have both read and listened to the complete ATLAS, Alien War, Captain’s Crucible, and Argonauts series. Nothing beats reading and listening at the same time. This is the first book in the Mech series, and with it comes some of the best plot twists yet. Mech brings us a shocking sub-plot which involves the Nemesis, the Anarchist, and Rade’s MOTH platoon, as well as a new love interest for Rade, as some of the exciting happenings brought to life. And it all started with ATLAS, the kind of book you find in Sci Fi Fandom’s classic collections. Some of the best creators, author Isaac Hooke and narrator James Patrick Cronin, have brought their ideas to life with this book/audible combo, and it must have been difficult for Isaac Hooke to pick what would eventually end up in the book. I love and appreciate the stories and adventures and ideas that go into these Rade Galaal books. If you bought any of the Rade Galaal books, buy this to finish your collection. Recommended.

Robots and Toxic Masculinity

Can't I get giant killer robots in a scifi without the toxic macho bullsh!t? It's crazy that this kind of dreg can still be published in 2019. And let's not forget the overt transphobia in the first 30 mins for literally no reason. It's like it was written by a particularly ignorant 13 year old boy

I see why these books were free.

Immature dialogue as if it was written by a highschooler.

The interaction between the characters is awkward, as if all of them are trying to act cool and tough yet failing miserably.

Every character has a call sign and a name, but the author does not steadily use either one, so you do not know who is who.

The teasing and banter between the characters lacks wit and humor and comes off as cringe-worthy.

There is an overload of technobabble which seems to be more like just a bunch of big words thrown together than any coherent thought or believable concept.

Good story, poor performance

I’m only about halfway through the book and I had to quit. Seriously, the story is fairly good but I can’t stand the voice actor.

And I use that term lightly. Every single character (except TJ who rarely speaks) sounds the same, other than pitch, and has zero emotion. The lines are delivered flat, with slow pacing, and a weird inflection on them that makes almost every line sound like a question. “Oh, wow, that almost blew, my arm, off?”

It sucks because the narrative portions are voiced very well. Emotion matches the scene, inflections are correct and don’t sound like a robot or pot head. So part of me thinks this isn’t the fault of the voice actor, but instead someone WANTED all the characters to sound like stoned out idiots.

Maybe I’ll look for the kindle version and just read it myself.

Lots of middle school humor...

Middle school humor is tough to get through.
Author crams a little bit too much diversity into the book, a little obvious and over the top without much cultural depth of characters that make sex jokes all day long.

Appaling

I have listened to it while driving, cleaning and washing dishes, like almost all the other books...

BUT!

This book lacks a proper storyline, there are no real characters in it. The military "jokes" are plain "flat" - you listen and say WT*...

There was only one chapter at the end that gave me hopes that there will be something original and better the rest of this junk, but... no.

The description of battles is really simplistic and stupid... Aliens look like are not sentient at all, though somehow they have technology, but behave like mad bugs...

The reading of this book is SO MONOTONOUS... Sorry, man, but NO.

Like this the less of all books of the author.

It's confusing, lame and not really interesting. The other books of the author are way better 😀

Surprising.

At first I was not sure is it worth of listening but the way how writer tells about mechs, AIs, Moths etc. catched me to listen to the end. And in the end tears fell down, such a good book this is.

Reader did good voiceacting and reading. Gave a good voice for characters.

Fun story, but narrator is not up to scratch

As per title.

Narrator for the Arganauts series is terrific. So listening to this one is just painful.

Woke agenda with a story in the ad breaks..

Fiction is for entertainment, amusement and a pastime for relaxation. It's a holiday from reality with bad ass characters in impossible situations, one of which a reader can usually latch onto for the ride. If you feel like you need lectures on how to be a victim, admittedly the latest fad to make you one of the cool crowd these days, jump right in and enjoy.

Good listen

Good for a space opera.
Author tried and succeeded to add in some back story to the characters. Did get a bit tied of the “he said she said” writing when the narrator was using different voices.
Narration was good. Some of the voices could have been a bit stronger. Enjoy the narration overall though.
Will pick up the second book when it becomes available.

Skip Chapter 6

An oddly complicated mech adventure marred by a half dozen dudebros doing expositional therapy.
