Publisher's summary

Enlisting was his only ticket out.

Raised fatherless in a galactic Brinktown, Joe Pikeman only ever wanted to escape.

The Galactic Guard offered that escape, with the promise of regular meals to boot. Now Joe is a full Guardsman, with his own ship and a snide partner bot who hates humans almost as much as he hates other bots.

To the pirates he hunts, Joe is known as the Butcher. His bloody reputation has landed him in the center of a sweeping conspiracy that threatens to stamp out the galaxy’s last surviving human settlements.

As Joe races against time to salvage what’s left of his species, one thing becomes crystal clear: You can never escape your past.

It all starts on Earth, humanity’s deserted homeworld....

Utterly bonkers

I first discovered Scott Bartlett through his Ixan universe, hard military SF. I loved it. This was so very different and I loved it even more. An unholy combination of military SF, fantasy, cyberpunk, Marvin the Paranoid Android, Cranky Gandalf, Ready Player One, and the Stainless Steel Rat, this series hit the ground running and never stopped.

I can't describe it with any other word than this: bonkers. Utterly bonkers, and so much fun. Mark Boyett lent his usual gravitas to the proceedings which made it even better. Highly recommended. I hope there's more to come in this universe.

Good Enough

Great narration. Good story. Some lazy writing. Small spoiler: The hero makes it through, well everything, by killing anyone who gets in his way. Then as the bad guy lays at his feet...He lets him go. There are a few places where the author has the hero act out of character just, seemingly to advance the plot. Of course I am only half of the book.

Update: Having listened to more of the book I have something else I do not understand. Not only did the hero chose not to kill the bad guy (really bad) he has since then found out the universe is about to be taken over by that bad guy he hasn't told anyone about it. And he's had plenty of time. Just wierd.

the story was not particularly interesting to me. it just lacked excitement. why is it 300 years in the future we are not living hundreds of years but can fly at ftl speed and can regrow limbs.

Ehh, it’s mostly a defense of Comic-Con’s. At least in the first hour I managed. The guy can write okay.

The author can write okay. But it’s just Comic-Con in space. I hope they come up with more original work. God speed brother.

Rehash of 'The Matrix'

Set between the real world and a simulation where people upload their consciousness. Neo whoops I mean Joe visits the oracle and heads to the source to put matters right.

The matrix in space

The story is just the matrix in space and not a very good version of it the main character must have the best plot armor ever if he's still alive after losing so many fights also the idea that a galactic civilization could fall in such a small amount of time without an outside force is just off so is the science for the story

Great performance, bad writing, halfway i quit

I am only half way through so take this with the appropriate grain of salt please. However, I have listened to hundreds of hours of books in the same genre without complaint.

The author seems incapable of producing a plot built around anything other than let’s screw over the main character. He ignores obvious solutions to problems such as Moe (after he was acquitted he could have requested new crew members).

Just an idiotic main character blundering through the plot.

An Epic Space Opera Box Set

Truly enjoyed the story of a galactic guard troubleshooter, Joe Pikeman and his struggles against authorities, family and his own prejudices. Bartlett presents us with an interesting world left after the Fall, when a majority of humanity choose to upload to the Subverse to avoid the calamity. The story includes everything from space pirates to sidekick robots which keeps it fun while exploring larger ideas.

Fantastic

I love the dynamic between the author and the narrator. The author has an incredible way of making the unbelievable real with detail that paints the picture in my mind. Slow and steady he sets up the scene, then plunged into battle like a plunge of the sword. The narrators use of pace and voice control has just as much to do with creating the story as the author.

It’s fantastic.
