Publisher's summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “This will be one of your favorite books of all time. Through her intensely vulnerable, honest, and hilarious reflections, Chelsea shows us more than just her insides. She shows us ourselves.”—Amy Schumer

Don’t miss Chelsea Handler’s new Netflix stand-up special, Revolution, now streaming!

In the wake of President Donald Trump’s election, feeling that her country—her life—has become unrecognizable, Chelsea Handler has an awakening. Fed up with the privileged bubble she’s lived in, she decides it’s time to make some changes.

She embarks on a year of self-sufficiency and goes into therapy, prepared to do the heavy lifting required to make sense of a childhood that ended abruptly with the death of her brother. She meets her match in an earnest, nerdy shrink who dissects her anger and gets her to confront her fear of intimacy. Out in the world, she channels her outrage into social action and finds her voice as an advocate for change. With the love and support of an eccentric cast of friends, assistants, family members (alive and dead), and a pair of emotionally withholding rescue dogs, Chelsea digs deep into the trauma that shaped her inimitable worldview and unearths some glittering truths that light up the road ahead.

Thrillingly honest and insightful, Chelsea Handler’s darkly comic memoir is also a clever and sly work of inspiration that gets us to ask ourselves what really matters in our own lives.

Critic reviews

“A disarmingly, unblinkingly honest work.”Chicago Tribune

“This will be one of your favorite books of all time. Through her intensely vulnerable, honest, and hilarious reflections Chelsea shows us more than just her insides. She shows us ourselves.”—Amy Schumer

“The Chelsea Handler I know is a take-no-prisoners activist for the causes she believes in. She brings the same fearlessness and commitment to telling her truth in this book. I’m hoping that one day, in exchange for this blurb, she will let me see the security camera footage of the dog fight in her bedroom.”—Trevor Noah

Best of All Her Books

I have read all of Chelsea’s book and this one was by far the best. I was crying and laughing through the entire book. It gave me a whole new perspective on her and made me think about the things I am doing in my own life.

My Praise: It’s very funny and moves fast. I have loved Chelsea and she has been a part of my entertainment life for probably 15 years now! I’ve never read her books before though so this was my first and I really enjoyed it- even though audiobooks tend to challenge me- this worked for me. I loved hearing the raw emotion in her voice. I would give anything to meet this woman. I feel so kindred to her and I’m grateful for the shared therapy! Hahaha.

My Criticism: 1.0 speed was too slow and 1.25 was a hair too fast. I kept it at 1.25 but I wish a thousand times over there was 1.15 which I have on other platforms and it seems to be the “sweetspot” for me.

Secondly, as a serious Chelsea fan some of the book content did feel a little “yeah i know this” or “yeah i saw this” to me. I didn’t mind hearing it in book form but I did wish there was a little more book-exclusive “meat” between the pages.

Excellent!

Not what I expected, but much better. I can totally relate to Chelsea in many ways. She tells her story openly and hilariously.

Must-Listen

What an amazing book, Chelsea's performance was flawless and had me choked up at times. It is really introspective and if you are someone who has thought about diving deeper into your psyche, you will find this endlessly fascinating. Highly, highly recommend!

Wow. Everything I expected and more.

I have been a huge fan of Chelsea for quite some time. Never in my life would I have thought she’d be this open, vulnerable, and willing to learn. 10/10 recommend.

Holy F*ck- great book! Great Insights!

As a therapist who helps clients with attachment injuries, it was deeply satisfying and heart warming to hear Chelsea Handler’s story of waking up to herself, healing through grieving & finding a way to make sense of her patterns —- super great. Major appreciation for the work of Dan Siegal too 🙌🏼. Highly recommended book!

Just when I thought I couldn’t love her more...

Delightfully dark and unexpectedly vulnerable ride through one’s introspective awakening. Something that I really connected to and felt deep, meaningful and empowering. Chelsea’s emotional reading really injects the tone into your soul.

Inspirational, must read!

I didn't know what to expect. This hook kept popping up on my ig feed so I decided to give it a shot and was not disappointed. It's such a down to earth, raw, unapologetic story told on on the typical Chelsea Handler humor. didn't think I could like her more than I already did but this book helped me see her from a different lense.

Thank you Chelsea

Thank you for sharing your story. It has meant the world to me. I have not been the same since the election. Hearing your struggle has allowed me to reevaluate and dig into my own identification, awareness, and modification. Thank you again.
