Publisher's Summary

New York Times Best Seller

Ali Wong's heartfelt and hilarious letters to her daughters (the two she put to work while they were still in utero) covering everything they need to know in life, like the unpleasant details of dating, how to be a working mom in a male-dominated profession, and how she trapped their dad.

“Knife-sharp...a genuine pleasure.” (The New York Times)

Named one of the best books of the year by Time • Variety • Chicago TribuneGlamour New York

In her hit Netflix comedy special, Baby Cobra, an eight-month pregnant Ali Wong resonated so strongly that she even became a popular Halloween costume. Wong told the world her remarkably unfiltered thoughts on marriage, sex, Asian culture, working women, and why you never see new mom comics on stage but you sure see plenty of new dads.

The sharp insights and humor are even more personal in this completely original collection. She shares the wisdom she’s learned from a life in comedy and reveals stories from her life off stage, including the brutal single life in New York (i.e. the inevitable confrontation with erectile dysfunction), reconnecting with her roots (and drinking snake blood) in Vietnam, tales of being a wild child growing up in San Francisco, and parenting war stories. Though addressed to her daughters, Ali Wong’s letters are absurdly funny, surprisingly moving, and enlightening (and gross) for all.

Praise for Dear Girls

“Fierce, feminist, and packed with funny anecdotes.” (Entertainment Weekly)

"[Wong] spins a volume whose pages simultaneously shock and satisfy.... Dear Girls is not so much a real-talk handbook as it is a myth-puncturing manifesto." (Vogue)

"[A] refreshing, hilarious, and honest account of making a career in a male-dominated field, dating, being a mom, growing up, and so much more.... Yes, this book is addressed to Wong’s daughters, but every reader will find nuggets of wisdom and inspiration and, most important, something to laugh at." (Bustle)

Critic Reviews

"Dear Girls can be crude and flippant, LOL-dense and breezy - so breezy, in fact, you will be desensitized to the grossest of Wong’s gross-outs by chapter one, at which point you have already learned how to hold in a fart during yoga. But as with her stage comedy, she is also sneakily thoughtful about the public roles she occupies - Asian American, working mom, woman on comedy stages - and the come-from-behind grind they necessarily demand." (Washington Post)

"By now, you know that Ali Wong doesn’t have a filter - and thank goodness for that. She brings the same level of candid heart and humor that you love from her comedy to her new book, covering everything from growing up in San Francisco to finding comedy to having kids. Dear Girls is a ridiculously funny and enlightening collection of letters to her daughters, but it may be just the thing that you need to hear, too." (HelloGiggles)

"A collection of letters to her baby girls that are barn-burning reflections on being a working mom, marriage, sex, and more. If you've ever wanted to have Ali Wong's signature voice in your head for 200+ pages, now's your chance." (Glamour)

"Yes, we fell in love with Ali Wong when we watched her Netflix stand-up specials. Yes, we fell in love with her all over again when we watched her in Always Be My Maybe this Summer. This fall, her world domination is complete with the release of her essay collection, Dear Girls. In it, you'll find hilarious essays written as letters to her two daughters, that are filled with insight and smart observations about motherhood, womanhood, and life in general. (And yes, you're going to fall in love with her all over again. Again.)" (PopSugar)

"All the grunts, the guttural noises, the glee with which she waxes poetic...together serve to bracket the harder times that Wong faced emotionally as she fought to make a name for herself. Frank discussions of what it was like to explore the outer limits of what was deemed 'acceptable' for a young woman in comedy while navigating the dangers of actually being a woman in comedy, the terrors of safekeeping your own body in scary situations, make the raunch crucial to her story. Her embrace of the ugly as intrinsically human makes listening to the groans and snorts and other nonverbal sounds she emits a genuine pleasure." (The New York Times Book Review)

Editor's Pick

I need sparkle, and Ali Wong delivers
"Watching Ali Wong’s Netflix specials when I was on maternity leave last year was probably the best thing I could’ve done for my hormone-filled soul. Nobody understood me like Ali, and for months I would quote her—without prompt—in everyday conversation. Apologies in advance, people who know me in real life (looking at you, my fellow editors), because that’s about to start all over again. Dear Girls, written as a series of letters to her daughters, is filled with Ali’s trademark humor, wisdom, and brutal—yet hilarious—honesty."

This book is the shit!

Honestly, I loved everything about this book! Ali Wong's narration is perfect. She tells it like it is, she's honest, and does not hold anything back. I'm not a mother, but as a daughter I can definitely respect this type of honesty. I think what topped it off for me was the afterword done by her husband, Justin Hakuta. To hear a man speak they way he did about Ali and his daughters just melted my heart and reafirms my belief that there are good men out there. Thank you for this book!!

Loved every moment of listening to it!

As a Chinese I first encountered Ali Wong through Instagram posts by other celebrities I am following, then followed her on instagram, and I smile or laugh looking at her posts, then watched the cartoon she narrated as one of the birds:) listening to this book brought me so much joy!! I finished it within two days!!! So appreciative of her honesty, humor and grounded personality. Also loved her husband’s afterwards, filled with love towards their daughters and families:) Try it out! You wouldn’t be disappointed!!!

So honest and truthful

Ali exposes herself in such away that makes you look and reflect at your own life. Written as a letter to her daughters Ali shares what she has learned in her life. Through Ali’s sharing she not only tells her story but also shares that there is learning through all the journey we call life. One surprising quote to hear from her “There is no linear path to success. And no linear path to maintaining it even if you do achieve it.” That type of wisdom only comes from a person that has live through difficult times.

Absolutely hilarious & perfect

Longer review to come but short & sweet: hilarious, full of heart & 100% Ali Wong! Definitely one to get on audiobook even if you don’t do them because she brings it to life in a way I wouldn’t have even liked let alone love if I’d done text. Definitely a great choice for rough days!

Laugh out loud funny

I was so entrenched in Ali’s storytelling that I was late on my commute. Her ability to weave through vulnerable moments with raw and real humor comes through in this book just as much as her standup comedy. You won’t be disappointed!

She is very funny but a little overkill with the raunchy sex talk

I love Ali as a comedian, as a modern women and an actress. I did enjoy this book a lot but didn’t give it 5 stars— she is talented, very funny, had great backstories, but she did seem to go all over the place with her personal timeline with her past stories. I like that she wrote this to her daughters- nice touch. Might have been nice as a timeline from young to now. Also for me (and I am NO prude) it got old with the graphic sex stories and a$$ eating as I personally do not think you have to be that raunchy to be funny, especially as a women. I look forward to see her more with her movies (loved her in Be My Maybe), comedy acts (great on Netflix), and possibly more books too. Jenn

Laugh-out-loud funny!!!

Ali Wong geniusly mixes raunchy comedy with nuggets of wisdom. It will make you cry from laughing but also from being moved by her honestly and truth. The icing on the cake is dad’s epilogue—made me cry the whole time! You just feel the genuine love all around. Highly recommend!!!

Same Ali...Loved This

It was great to hear Ali Wong be so vulnerable and honest in her book. I think her daughters will truly appreciate their mother on a different level one day. It was just as good as her stand up and I'm so glad I took a listen. I've always dreamt of leaving my sons a similar book about myself, but it's probably best I don't. If I had daughters, a different story. :-)

Ali Wong, in the long format version. Enjoyable, comical, raw. I expected nothing less from her and she delivered.
