Enemies to Lovers

I love these two main characters so much! I fell in love with them from the moment this book started. This is a very good enemies to lovers PNR story. The plot was a good blend of action and character development and kept me on the edge of my seat for a lot of the time. I loved the mystery and trying to figure out what was going on and why. This author put their own spin on the witch and witch hunter stories and definitely made it a must listen to! The narrator did a fantastic job with the different characters and emotions. I can't wait for the next book!

Gritty queer romance

I really wanted to like this book--it had pretty much everything I love: magic, queerness, snark, and an excellent narrator. I found, though, that I just didn't end up liking either of the main characters. Wade was callous and caustic--with a good reason for that!--and I thought Caleb would be a good counterpoint to that, but I found him to be jaded and caustic, too. I gave it a good try but in the end I just found I couldn't connect.

I think this is very much a personal taste thing, because overall, this book is excellent quality--the writing was excellent, narration excellent, setup excellent all around. I tend to like sweeter romances, though, and this is much more gritty.

If you like gritty shows like Game of Thrones, Outlander, and Billions vs, say, This is Us or A Discovery of Witches (though maybe a bit of the latter!), you'll likely love this book! And I'd wholeheartedly recommend it. I probably wouldn't recommend it to the squeamish, though.

I was given a free copy of this book at my request and voluntarily left this review.

Great book from a new to me author

This is a first time author and narrator listen for me. I was drawn in by the blurb because I am a fan of paranormal romance, especially when witches are involved. The cursed heart part was intriguing but also confusing to me before starting the story, but I definitely wanted to give this one a chance. The story was so much more than I thought it would be.

There is definitely a gritty tone to the story. We are introduced to Wade, who works for a witch hunters council. He has hunted down a witch and murders her before he steals her spells and snorts them. He is a killer and addicted to spells like they are drugs. It doesn't endear him to me at all. However, I don't really know if the witches are good or bad, so I had to reserve my judgment. Caleb is a witch who runs a flower shop but is also tasked to find out who is murdering witches by their policing agency. His empath abilities are handy when trying to subdue someone coming at him since he can project as well as take in emotions. Caleb has become tired of feeling so much though.

Their meeting was interesting because they both had reason to hate each other, but they were also attracted (which was strange for Wade, who thought he was straight) and they were both in a position to help each other out. Things were not as cut and dried as they seemed and both the witch hunters leader and the witches council leader held secrets about Wade and Caleb's pasts. Memory loss, betrayal, lies and deception were revealed as the story goes on. The plot was thick but never lost me. Though Caleb wanted to trade Wade's cursed heart for his own, he realizes he just wants Wade's cursed heart to love him instead. I don't want to brush away Wade's past actions because I wouldn't want Caleb to fall in love with a cold blooded murderer but rest assured the secrets that are revealed make it acceptable to fall in love with their love story.

The world building of this book was fantastic. The blurb mentions the witches and the witch hunters but a whole host of paranormal characters live alongside the human world without them knowing it. There are trolls, incubi, vampires, and even phoenixes. I was pleased by the narration. The narrator did a good job of voicing these English characters without making them sound too stuffy. I would definitely listen to him again and I have definite plans to read or listen to the next books in this series.

Enemies to lovers?

So much yes! I read Foxy Heart which is a precursor to Killer Heart. I fell in love with the characters, and I am so happy we get to know more about Caleb and Wade. This was a great story about people on different sides coming together. Rhys Lawless's puts a nice spin to the magical/supernatural world. If you are looking for high steam, this story might not be what you are looking for BUT I think you should give it a try. The tale is so enjoyable, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I have never heard John York before, and I'm happy I have been introduced to him. He had wonderful energy, and I loved his voices. All the characters were discernible and the dialogue was easy to follow.

Wonderful

An excellent, innovative tale with splendid narration by John York. A perfect balance of story elements and m/m romance. A good deal of humor and pathos included at no extra charge. I eagerly look forward to the next installment. Kudos to Rhys Lawless for an extraordinary imagination.

Enjoyable start to a new series :)

Two men on opposing sides have to work together against a common enemy - not quite enemies-to-lovers, but fun all the same.
The world-building for the story is well done and I had no trouble following the story, (I have not read the prequel, Foxy Heart). The story has magic, suspense, some twists (I didn't see coming) and so much more going on. Wade and Caleb make a good couple and hope to see more of them and their growing relationship.
John York provides a multi-faceted performance - characters are distinct, emotions portrayed well, accents were well done. Definitely a great way to enjoy the book!
