Publisher's summary

When jackal shifter Quade Danas was banished from his pack for being gay, he spent years in the military escaping his father's prejudice before returning to civilian life as a bodyguard for Roman Howell, the teenage son of a very rich man. After Roman is in an accident that leaves him physically scarred and emotionally distant, Quade is the only one who can get through to him. As Roman becomes a man, he realizes what he wants - his bodyguard by his side and in his bed. Unfortunately, Quade can't seem to see past the kid Roman once was to the man he has become, certain Roman's feelings are merely misplaced gratitude. But Roman knows a lot more than Quade realizes, and he's used to persevering, no matter how many impediments life throws his way. He wants the chance to prove to Quade that he's strong enough for a jackal alpha to call mate.

Despite the decades Quade has been away, and the heartache of his father's rejection, his inborn loyalty to the pack remains, and his abrupt departure left the jackal shifters without an alpha heir. As a psychopath shifter staking claim as alpha draws Quade back home, he may be forced to make a choice he never anticipated. But doing so means he must leave Roman behind… unless somehow they find a way to make loyalty and love work together.

The Best Shifter Series

I have read almost all M/M shifter audio books, and this series is the best. It’s clever with great humor mixed with shifters angst.

Won’t be sorry.

Another great book by M Calmes

I love to read here books. They have great story lines, are endearing, and have humor in a dry wit kind of way.
I've read both books in this series and am hoping for johns story next.
Also have read all of a matter of time more than once, want more of those also.
Looking forward to reading more
Thank you M Calmes

H O L Y, WOW Wow !

Absolutely blew me away ! Author, just captures you by the gut, and drags you with her on her journey to give the characters life and such depth !
You will cry tear of sorrow at their suffering, and tears of joy as their steps forward lead them to their future's, passion's, and the fulfillment of their heart's desires ! ! !

Entertaining with an average narrator

I liked the story, and how much will Roman has.
The narrator wasn't outright bad, but it was often hard to understand who said what, as he didn't really have a great range of voices for the different characters.

One of my all time favorite Mary stories in audio

I can’t believe I’ve never formally reviewed this! I listen to this several times a year, it’s one of my all time favorite audiobooks.

First, it’s about Jackal shifters – so unique! They have a slightly different shifter story than the typical wolf-shifters, a bit of Egyptian lore thrown in and some unique attributes.

Second, this begins a way cool series that is continuing as we speak with Jon’s story! But we already got Arman and Linus’ story – a Stag and a … secret!

Third, Tristan Effin’ James. Gah. His voice is so sensual! I love how honey smooth it is. So easy to listen to! He gives Quade a nice “alpha” voice and Roman a lighter but not too femme voice. He has excellent pacing and handles the emotion, the physical times and action all equally well. He’s frankly a joy and I just love his narrations.

Fourth, WOW oh WOW the sensual times are off the charts! But - also mixed in with loads of feels - so PERFECT!

It’s a bit of a May/December story, with some hurt/comfort and then the “mates and mine” thrown on top. Quade has been around forever so he has that “protector” thing going on. Roman is scarred – badly – so we get some hurt/comfort. By the time the two admit their feelings, there’s the urgent “mate” compelling force behind their first interactions. It adds up to SUPER HOT and sweet but also deeply emotional.

Because it’s Mary, it’s also funny. The two bicker like an old married couple and it’s hysterical. Also because it’s Mary, Quade is super perfect and does everything exactly right but is baffled at how much he’s valued for his actions.

If you’re a fan of shifters, Mary Calmes, Tristan James and/or funny hurt/comfort stories – this is for you!

good story, not the right narrator

the story was nice, Mary Calmes is a wonderful storyteller, but the narration kind of lost it for me. there was not any/enough differentiation between characters and everything was read in the same even tone. Tristan James' voice has that wonderful gravel tone that I feel is necessary for male narration, but there was little inflection and it dragged the story down.

Easy going

The book is a really well told book. I personally find that the first book is always the most in depth due to having to introduce so many characters who will reappear throughout the series. The only down side is while in other books the tone of voice changes to denote different characters this audiobook does. It. The cadence changes but not the sound. So be prepared to pay attention so you know who is saying what.
