Publisher's summary

Andras:
When the light-magic users known as Casters took everything from me, I vowed to make them pay.

Little did I know the perfect opportunity would show up in the form of a sweet Caster the moment I took his arrow to the heart…literally. Bastian knows that I’m made of dark magic, the very thing he’s been taught to destroy. But instead of turning away from me, he takes a chance on me, leading me behind the walls of the group out to kill me.

Bastian makes me remember that there’s more to life than revenge—although I can’t help but love the look he gives me when I cause chaos. But what I don't realize is there's someone who's been watching me, someone only Bastian can help me fight.

Bastian:
How is it that a man wielding dark magic is the only one who can save me?

Even though Andras goes against everything I fight for, I can’t stop myself from drawing him into my life.

What’s worse is that it’s clear he wants something from the Casters, but when he makes me laugh and feel like I’m living for the first time in my life, it’s impossible to turn him away.

When I find myself caught in a web of lies between those I trusted and those I feared, I realize the only one I can rely on is the one person who’s forbidden.

Cast in Shadows contains an antihero with no filter and a strange obsession with chili, a “pet” who sleeps through all the excitement, and possibly the least romantic movie date ever.

He does the voices

Greg has a way of making the voices easily distinguishable from each other. I can tell who's talking by the way he changes his tone and inflection. He’s my favorite reader. And when he pairs up with my favorite author I know I’m in for an enjoyable time. This book didn’t disappoint. Bastion and Andras were a totally believable couple, one I was definitely rooting for. I can’t wait to listen to the next book!

Fun story with a HFN

Classic Alice Winters. Fun characters and interesting story. I want to re-listen to the book when it ended.

Formulaic but fun

If, like me, you are a huge fan of Alice you will notice that her formula is pretty set. And here is yet another example of crazy character meets sensible character trope. That said her audio books never fail to amuse (huge props to Greg here). Her quirky, reckless, but loveable characters are interesting and just different enough to keep her fans listening.
Can't wait for book 2.

"Gore, violence and chili!"

I love Alice Winters stories!!! Greg does a fantastic job at his voicing and how presents the story to us! I can't wait to read/listen to the next book!
The part where ya find out who is who is like a wind up what a minute moment.
The characters sayings are adorable. funny and straight up I wanna hit them just for saying that to the baby MC that I felt protective over, but thats the older sister kicking inside.

I did not dislike anything about this book. Twas a fantastic listen and I can't wait for more of her books 🥰

yay evil cults

I really enjoyed this book, as I enjoy all Alice Winters' books. Greg Boudreaux did a great job, as was expected. I really liked how Bastian is actually very strong and competent, but has been mentally and emotionally beaten down until Andras supports him into realizing his own worth. Both of them are better together, despite all the reasons that should tear them apart. There are so many questions that are still unanswered at the end of this book and I just want the next one ASAP to get those answers!

enjoyed it

📖 Story comment: good pace, likeable characters, entertaining story.
I enjoy this author, although her most recent titles seem to be following the same "formula", at least I know what I'm getting: snarky, silly, chaotic and a little over the top - the writing in this one didn't feel as sharp as some of her other books, there are alot of loose ends that I expect will be answered in the next book, but overall all i'm looking for is entertainment, so it's all good.

🎧 Narrator comment: Greg Boudreaux has done a masterful performance bringing the characters and story to life. He has good timing, rhythm, inflections and intonations and it's easy to distinguish the characters from each other.
A thoroughly enjoyable performance from a narrator at the top of his game.

another fun series

first let's start by saying this wouldn't be as amazing without the amazing narration of Greg Bordeaux! he just brings everything he touches to life!
And here I fall down another alice winters rabbit hole! This should be another brilliantly unique series and cannot wait to see what happens next with this group and let's just hope Roman pulls his head from his bum and chooses the correct side and helps our not so heroic heroes.
