Publisher's Summary
She Chose the Hardest Way
The daughter of a Legion war hero, fighting was in Andien Broxin's blood. But the battles Republic marines face on strange and alien worlds are a far cry from the vaunted, brutal, no-holds-barred conflicts fought at the edge of the galaxy by the elite legionnaires.
Until a devastating war erupts right in the Republic’s stellar backyard.
Newly stationed on a mid-core planet being harassed by terrorist revolutionaries, Andien and her fellow “hullbusters” find themselves right in the middle of a desperate fight for survival. All their training, standards, discipline - all the hard paths - have led to this. If she and her fellow marines are to come out of this alive, Andien will have to find out who she truly is...and what she can become.
Best-selling military science fiction author Jason Anspach and USMC/US Army veteran Michelle C. Meyers explore the rigors of combat, survival, and the human will in this edge-of-your-seat account set in the Galaxy’s Edge universe.

Is bourbon the quintessential American liquor? Bourbon is not just alcohol - the amber-colored drink is deeply ingrained in American culture and tangled in American history. From the early days of raw corn liquor to the myriad distilleries that have proliferated around the country today, bourbon is a symbol of the United States. This course traces bourbon's entire history, from the 1700s, with Irish, Scottish, and French settlers setting up stills and making distilled spirits in the New World, through today's booming resurgence.

Story
The tide is turning against the colonists in the Revolutionary War, and 18-year-old Elizabeth Morris cannot sit by idly. Quietly disdainful of her Tory parents, who drag her along to society events and welcome a British soldier into their home during their occupation of New York City, Elizabeth decides to take matters into her own hands. She realizes that, as a young woman, no one around her believes that she can comprehend the profound implications of being a nation at war - she is, effectively, invisible. And she can use this invisibility to her advantage.

African American athletes competed in America long before the 20th century - in fact, they even competed during the years of slavery.

Loved this story, but:
this was a powerful story of a glimpse into wartime military life... Absolutely loved the premise.. I could. However, not get over the botched reading of the word corpsman. I'm sorry to say it brought me back to the reality that the reader was not a marine or a soldier because of it. I often was immersed in the imagery and feeling of the moment and then, there it is, "corpSman" and it messed it all up for me.

Good back story
I liked her back story. However the narrator's pronunciation of Corpsman is wrong. The "s" is silent along with the "p" which she got correct. ie, like in the Marine Corps. It made my ears cringe every time, only because I am a retired US Navy Hospital Corpsman.

Fairly uninteresting
I guess one of my pet peeves is horrible accents and narrators that should not attempt something they suck at. The example would be this narration of a character who is supposed to be Scottish? I am guessing because it fades in and out of a bad Irish to a bad Scottish accent. Other than that, the book was kinda boring. I could not get past the first chapter. No wonder it was free...

Galaxies Edge prequel novella to GI Jane book?
Decent stand alone novella in the Galaxies Edge universe. I’ve only heard a few of the books and they range a bit from extreme military sci-fi to Star Wars fantasy action. This one landed fully on the military sci-fi end. Other than taking place on another planet and referencing aliens, this could easily have been told as a modern day earth military piece.
The story follows marine Major Andien Broxin through the excellent narration of Khristine Hvam. This is the first military book I’ve heard her narrate and I was surprised at how well I took to it, especially since I sometimes find her voice a bit nasal. I liked her accent for the supporting character of Legionaire Lt. Owens. I may need to go back and check out more of the GE books; if Lt. Owens is in them, I’d like to see more of his story too. Or, since this could be a short prequel setting up Andien’s future with the Legionaires, perhaps this bodes well for a full length book with the both of them- not as a romance, mind you. I quite liked that Andien was a woman, and the story accounted for that... while not using her gender for some sort of romance plot line.
Fans will enjoy the hallmark Legionnaires and their mythical abilities, along with the inside catchphrases and jokes that bond listeners in patriotism and battle pride (KTF!). I liked that, compared to some of the others in the GE series, this one contained military action without going overboard on the politics, point vs enlisted commentary, or military porn vibe. Yes, it’s always a bit of a cheat to create future cuss words to get around current slang, but the story was more enjoyable without a machine gunning of Fx and other profanity throughout.
The ratio of action to story worked well for me, except for the slightly overlong political negotiation piece. Overall a solid and diverting free military action story, with a sci-fi side to boot.

Great back story
An excellent back story for two characters in the main series. I'm excited to see what comes next in this side series and how it ties in with future novels!
Only complaint I have has pronunciation of a species that seems to be a running gag at this point with all the different ways it has been pronounced by all the narrators.

I love the Galaxy Edge Universe, I was looking forward to this one. The one thing that grated was her bad, awful attempt at Alec Owen's Scottish accent, it sounded Irish, East European and some other previously unheard of accent.

It killed a couple of hours
I'm not entirely sure the story knows what it wants to be. I can't say it's your typical military sci-fi. which is the audience that it's pitched at. It came over more of a portrayal of a strong confident woman overcoming a sexist, misogynistic system.
I'm something of an old dinosaur that reads a lot of military sci-fi and I can't say it rocked my world. I found it somewhat average for the genre. Certainly not the worst book I've read. As said, it killed a couple of hour listening to it at work.
If you are looking for a story of how a strong confident woman competes in and overcomes a male dominated system it's for you. I'm not so sure if you just like military sci-fi.
At times it felt like the authors were trying too hard portray their knowledge of military acronyms.
The elephant in the room. The Sottish accent. I actually found it funny, rather that annoying. It thought it was something of a cross between Scottish and German. But it did give me a smile.
So to sum up. For a couple of quid it was OK it killed a couple of hours. Not the best book I've listened to but certainly not the worst.

Forget this
After listening to RC Bray in the Tin Man I immediately got this expecting more of the same as it’s supposed to be the next in series.
There is no mention of the tin man in this.
This story is totally boring, no tug at the heart strings, no sardonic comedy just some woman droning on and on and on.
On the plus side she does a good impression of ground keeper willy’s Asian cousin.

Please don't let the narrator do anymore accents!
Great story but the please just let us imagine the accents of the characters in the story, tell me they are Scottish or Irish (I really was not sure).
Kristine can tell a great story but this does take away from the overall performance.

Full of tropes...
... Yet still a good listen. While a lot of the book feels a bit cliche with all the woman in the military tropes, the performance was great und the writing and dialogues decent. Not as good as Tin-man though. Not by far.

Not much of a story
No real story, was supposed to be about a female marine but she spent the whole book taking about the male legionnaires. Got boring very fast.

Great story
Fast flowing and highly enjoyable. Narrator choice suited the story - not sure what Legionaire Owen's accent was 🤦🏼♂️

well paced and excellent narration
I normally don't listen to many shorter audio books. This one has made me reconsider this stance. excellent narration along with a well paced story had me listening in almost one long sitting.

Awesome Story, worth every cent.
Great storyline , wish it could be made into a series of books, I would buy everyone of them.
I will not give the story away, but please buy it and enjoy it.
