It technically adds to the overall story but... I wouldn't have missed it if this short story didn't exist.

Reminds me of Tom Goodwin's "The Gulf Between" about a man stuck in full acceleration. But that man has a robot doctor aboard that keeps him alive, and conscious, as he flies off into eternity.
