Story
Since the turn of the century, a generation has come of age knowing only war, recession, political gridlock, racial hostility, and a simmering fear of environmental calamity. In the country’s forgotten pockets, where industry long ago fled, where foreclosures, Walmarts, and opiates riddle the land, death rates for rural whites have skyrocketed, fueled by suicide, addiction, and a rampant sense of marginalization and disillusionment. This is the world the characters in Stephen Markley’s brilliant debut novel, Ohio, inherit. This is New Canaan.

Story
American Book Award-winning author Tananarive Due's second collection of stories ranges from horror to science fiction to suspense. From the mysterious, magical town of Gracetown to the aftermath of a pandemic to the reaches of the far future, Due's stories all share a sense of dread and fear balanced with heart and hope. In some of these stories, the monster is racism itself; others address the monster within, or other universal struggles set against the supernatural or surreal. All of them are written with Due's trademark attention to detail and deep characterization.

Story
It is said that dreams are harmless, that they are nothing more than the meaningless fancies of an unconscious mind. It’s only a dream. It’s only a dream. It’s only a dream. This, of course, is something we tell ourselves when we wake up screaming in the dead of night. We repeat the mantra in order to bring ourselves back to reality, in order to remind ourselves that there is nothing to fear.

Publisher's summary
The need for love - obsessive, self-destructive, unpredictable - takes us to forbidden places, as in the chilling world of Give Me Your Heart, a new collection of stories by the inimitable Joyce Carol Oates. In the suspenseful "Strip Poker", a reckless adolescent girl must find a way of turning the tables on a gathering of increasingly threatening young men - can she "outplay" them? In "Smother!" a young woman's nightmare memory of childhood brings trouble on her professor mother - which of them will win? In "Split/Brain" a woman who has blundered into a lethal situation confronts the possibility of saving herself--will she take it? In "The First Husband", a jealous man discovers that his wife seems to have lied about her first marriage, and exacts a cruel revenge, years after the fact.
In 10 razor-sharp stories, National Book Award winner Oates shows that the most deadly mysteries often begin at home. Narrated by Angela Brazil, Susan Boyce, Stephen R. Thorne, Rachael Warren, Parker Leventer, Fred Sullivan, Emily Woo Zeller, Matt Clevy, and Mauro Hantman.

Story
In The Worst of You, just-wed architects Timo and Nia flee a murder scene, setting in motion a chain reaction of lies and betrayals that threaten to unravel everything they have built together. Twisted and propulsive, this thriller is told from the alternating perspectives of the couple and those close to them on Williwaw Island, each with their own motive to use the outcome of the murder case to their advantage. When a huge storm sweeps up the coast, trapping everyone on tiny Williwaw Island, it’s a race against time—and the elements — to stop the murderer from striking again.

Her targets were the titans of their era—billionaires, movie stars, politicians. Dorian said they had one thing in common: they had all committed crimes against women. They were rapists, abusers, master manipulators. Dorian left evidence of their heinous offenses with their bodies, and then she vanished without a trace.

Ms. Oates.....
You have a scary mind, and you write stories that move me, make me wonder, and steal my sleep.
Thanks.
And thanks to all the wildly talented narrators, who all did the finest favor they could for a listener: they disappeared, and let me fall into the story.

Pornographic and worse
Some of these stories are very good. A few are very disturbing. I am not entertained or educated by a story that tries to place me inside the mind of a pedophile child rapist and killer.
