Publisher's summary

A 2020 Audie Awards winner - short stories/collections

The number one New York Times best-selling author of The Fireman and Strange Weather returns with a dark and ingenious collection of 13 compelling short stories that showcase his ability to “push genre conventions to new extremes” (New York Times Book Review), performed by a stunning multi-cast featuring Zachary Quinto, Wil Wheaton, Kate Mulgrew, Neil Gaiman, Ashleigh Cummings, Joe Hill, Laysla De Oliveira, Nate Corddry, Connor Jessup, Stephen Lang, and George Guidall.

In this masterful collection of short fiction, Joe Hill dissects timeless human struggles in 13 relentless tales of supernatural suspense, including “In The Tall Grass”, one of two stories cowritten with Stephen King, basis for the terrifying feature film from Netflix.

A little door that opens to a world of fairy-tale wonders becomes the blood-drenched stomping ground for a gang of hunters in “Faun”. A grief-stricken librarian climbs behind the wheel of an antique bookmobile to deliver fresh reads to the dead in “Late Returns”. In “By the Silver Water of Lake Champlain”, two young friends stumble on the corpse of a plesiosaur at the water’s edge, a discovery that forces them to confront the inescapable truth of their own mortality...and other horrors that lurk in the water’s shivery depths. And tension shimmers in the sweltering heat of the Nevada desert as a faceless trucker finds himself caught in a sinister dance with a tribe of motorcycle outlaws in “Throttle”, cowritten with Stephen King.

Featuring two previously unpublished stories and a brace of shocking chillers, Full Throttle is a darkly imagined odyssey through the complexities of the human psyche. Hypnotic and disquieting, it mines our tormented secrets, hidden vulnerabilities, and basest fears and demonstrates this exceptional talent at his very best.

Critic reviews

"A terrific cast of narrators lend their voices to 13 stories by Joe Hill, two of which are cowritten with his dad, Stephen King.... Listeners will find their own favorites. However, booklovers may agree that 'Late Returns,' narrated by Wil Wheaton - about a librarian slipping through time to offer the dead one last great read - is the gem of this collection." Editor's Pick

A collection you don’t want to miss!
"Christmas must be in October this year because in the spooky spirit, Joe Hill has spun and gifted me with thirteen genius tales of horror that have been audibly amplified by a spectacular cast of performers from Zachary Quinto (*internally screams*) and to another favorite narrator of mine, Neil Gaiman. Joe even pairs up with the king of horror himself, Stephen King, to gift us with the short story “Throttle,” where one truck driver must defend himself against a motorcycle gang gone rogue in the middle of the desert. If that doesn’t entice you enough, Hill includes never-before-published stories, just in time to get you into the Halloween spirit."—Nicole R., Audible Editor

Like Father, Like Son!

I highly suggest working your way up to this book if you haven't read any of Joe Hill's works before, mainly so you can appreciate the beauty of how well he has strengthened his style and comes truly to himself. Starting off with a wonderfully written homage to his parents (Stephen and Tabitha King), and ending with his little footnotes on each story, this collection will keep you wishing it didn't end. Well rounded development, spacious new worlds, and excellent performances keep this book high on my shelf! Joe Hill makes the future of horror novels lool vast and untouched!

Fantastic Fantasies

Joe Hill is excellent. I loved this set of stories from the top to the bottom. Each one masterfully evoked a different set of emotions, from terror to joy and back again. I would absolutely recommend this series to practically anyone who doesn't mind a few downer endings, hahaha.

Joe Hill is always great

Hill has the a ability to craft both compelling dramas and terrifying horror. I always enjoy his short story collections, and full throttle didn't disappoint. Great collection.

Great collection. Complaints about “political statements” are erroneous and laughable

This is my third Joe Hill book, and my first collection of his short stories. I have also read Heart Shaped Box and NOS4A2 — both of which I recommend. The stories in this collection are all very good. Like any collection, I like some more than others, and a few are particularly engaging. If you have read some of his more recent works, you will also find interesting to see how the author’s writing has matured since the time when he wrote these stories, most of which are from several years ago for various publications. Other reviewer‘s who are complaining about the “politics/political statements“ in this book are simply out of their mind and quite insecure in their own political beliefs. Yes, there is a story that takes place within a family of right wing domestic terrorists. Yes, there is a scene in one story with two people arguing left vs right ideologies in the background. If finding these things in a work of fiction make you wet your pants, you shouldn’t be reading books, period. And if you find the very real concept of right wing domestic terrorism distasteful because you personally identify with the right wing, I invite you to take a hard look at yourself and ask why you support things when you don’t like the way they sound in print

Well written

I feel like a couple of the stories were great, and a few just couldnt keep my attention

They were all well written, so you may find more to your liking. I particularly enjoyed Faun and Throttle.

I did enjoy the authors notes and intro as well. I listened to an interview on audible of Joe Hill about this book after i finished it. I think had i listened to that first, a couoke more stories may ha e grabbed me.
