Audible Editor Reviews

Why we think it's Essential: Death never sounded so good. This one probably tops the list of unexpected pleasures here at Audible. Fisher Stevens gives a rousing narration, perfectly delivering Christopher Moore's often off-color jokes in a lovely "dead"pan. A Dirty Job has won fans for both author and narrator, and it will keep winning them for years to come. —Chris Doheny

Publisher's Summary

Charlie Asher is a pretty normal guy. A little hapless, somewhat neurotic, sort of a hypochondriac. He's what's known as a Beta Male: the kind of fellow who makes his way through life by being careful and constant, you know, the one who's always there to pick up the pieces when the girl gets dumped by the bigger/taller/stronger Alpha Male.

But Charlie's been lucky. He owns a building in the heart of San Francisco, and runs a secondhand store with the help of a couple of loyal, if marginally insane, employees. He's married to a bright and pretty woman who actually loves him for his normalcy. And she, Rachel, is about to have their first child.

Yes, Charlie's doing okay for a Beta. That is, until the day his daughter, Sophie, is born. Just as Charlie, exhausted from the birth, turns to go home, he sees a strange man in mint-green golf wear at Rachel's hospital bedside, a man who claims that no one should be able to see him. But see him Charlie does, and from here on out, things get really weird.

People start dropping dead around him, giant ravens perch on his building, and it seems that everywhere he goes, a dark presence whispers to him from under the streets. Strange names start appearing on his nightstand notepad, and before he knows it, those people end up dead, too. Yup, it seems that Charlie Asher has been recruited for a new job, an unpleasant but utterly necessary one: Death. It's a dirty job. But hey, somebody's gotta do it.

"Moore's enthusiasm and skill make it convincing, and his affection for the cast of weirdos gives the book an unexpected poignancy." (Publishers Weekly)

    "A must-read satire"

After having been told to check out Christopher Moore for a number of years, this was my first read of his work. I connected with the style and content in a way that made me want to read all of his work NOW. few works have me laughing out loud, but this got me there, and fast, in spite of the very real and meaningful underlying message, which was delivered without a heavy hand or pages of painful and stiff narration. I will say that it took me a bit to really like the main character, but after about the second chapter, I was hooked and couldn't put it down. This book had me reading as much of his other work as I could get my hands on as fast as possible.

    "Great story, fantastic narrator "

This is a wonderfully original story with lots of laughs. The narrator does an excellent job of give each character a voice which only adds to the humor. Great job. Recommended

I wasn't what I expected but it drew me in ! Charlie's character was amazing. Never judge a book by its cover... although I chose this Book because of its cover and it was a winner!

    "Love Fisher Stevens"

I love Christopher Moore stories, the unique and flawed characters that are relatable, and the literary world he creates. Fisher makes it come to life!

    "Entertaining to say the least!"

The story is hilarious and smart. It's very witty and entertaining. I listen to books at work and laughed out loud on more than one occasion. I am looking forward to the next book in the series. I could easily see this story being turned into a mini-series or movie. Only thing I wasn't a fan of was the music and some of the voices for the characters.

    "One of Moore's Best"

In my opinion, A Dirty Job is one of Christopher Moore’s best books. However, if you are familiar with him, but have not read a number of his books, I might start elsewhere. Like many, my feeling is Lamb is his absolute best. I think Fisher Stevens is so great with that book, it should be listened to rather than read. For those that agree, this book is along the same lines of humor. Heck, Fisher Stevens is the narrator and his tone is as perfect for this as for Lamb. It is worth noting that this book slightly draws in characters from Moore’s vampire books. While previously experiencing these characters is certainly not a prerequisite, I think it adds to the overall entertainment value, so you might detour to get through that trilogy before this book.

For those that are new to Christopher Moore, this is a good place to start. It is ludicrous, stupid and just plain fun. I am eagerly waiting for next month when my credits renew so I can start on the sequel.
