Publisher's summary

"Robert Clinch loved his boat more that anything else in the world...more than his wife...his kids...his girlfiend...even more than the largemouth bass he was pursuing." Thus begins a twisted tale of murder in the world of big-stakes bass fishing tournaments. Filled with ex-wives, evangelists, and an armed pit-bull, this is a story that could only be concocted by Carl Hiaasen, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, New York Times best-selling author, and czar of Florida noir fiction.

Critic reviews

"The cast of bizarre characters and the suspenseful events confirm Hiaasen's reputation for creating singular villains and heroes. While he's probably unpopular among some fellow citizens in his home state, he will certainly please readers who appreciate the Swiftian wit in his cautionary tales." (Publishers Weekly)
"The action is swift, and there are some very funny scenes." (Library Journal)

Not for dog lovers

While the story was at times enjoyable, there were a couple of very disturbing incidents involving dogs. The only animal that any of the characters cared about was the giant pet fish Queenie. Also there were too many characters that had no redeeming values. The book went from funny to vulgar and witty to stupid.
I chose this book because it was supposed to be humorous but I don't think it belongs in that category. There were some funny moments but not many.

First For Me

This was the first time I have listened to any books by this Author. All I can say is I am hooked! While the story was your typical whodunit everything else about it was exceptional. I loved the characters as well as the witty dialog. I hate to compare authors but his dialog is as good as Elmore Leonards. I caught myself laughing out loud sometimes and I hardly ever do that so if you want a fun ride through a good story I highly recommend this book.

13 hours of Narrator’s body noises

I had to stop listening to this book half way through; less than half I couldn't even make it to the second track. The story is fine but I agree it's no "Skinny Dip."

I had to stop listening because the noises that came from the narrator were such a gross distraction it finally became too much. Through most of the book you hear random rumblings of the narrator’s stomach which is usually followed by lip smacking and the sloshing of someone drinking water. Again it's not just once, but continually and for hours.

If you want 13 hours of listening to grotesque body noises this is the book for you!

who thought fishing could be this funny?!!

I have zero interest in fishing of any kind, but then a Carl Hiaasen book is never really about the subject it covers. His books are funny, odd, and I must say that this one was slightly gross at certain parts. But funny gross, not nauseating gross. I was alternating falling off the treadmill laughing so hard, smiling in the subway at one of his fabulous descriptions and thinking, "eeewwww." As with all his books, a pleasure. The listen is a breeze: never dull, nothing to slow the plot.

southern comfort

Double Whammy is another great listen. There is great literature and then there is great audible. There are very few books that make me laugh out loud as much as a Carl Hiaasen book read by George Wilson. You wonder where he gets his characters and then you read about the bank robber who used his own bank deposit slip to write the holdup note and you know-they are us. Some of us at least.

Not what I'd hoped for...

I downloaded this title after listening to Skinny Dip which was quite possibly the funniest book I'd ever read. Turned out to be a brutal disappointment. I kept waiting for it to get better but it just ended up being a marathon of forced listening. I finished it, but not without herculean effort.

I'm not ready to give up on this author, however. Skinny Dip was fantastic so I know he's got it going on. He just didn't have it when he penned this one. Double Whammy did, however, have good dialogue. So many other books have great storylines but the dialogue between the characters is like a seventies sitcom.

I cannot honestly recommend this book. The reason I gave it two stars was because one star ratings should be reserved for REAL stinkers, which this book is not. Had I not been looking for a book on par with Skinny Dip I might have really enjoyed it.

My first Hiaasen read a grand slam

There are two kinds opf audio books in my universe. One is the kind I have to LISTEN to and rewind if I miss something, etc. The kind I might read for actual knowledge of a subject matter or literature. This is the other kind; the kind I don't need to catch EVERY word of, although I try to catch every word These are "books to sit still and do hobbies with." This is the kind of book that is to me "music to clean by" - my house is spotless after a weekend with this book because I couldn't "put it down." It is easy to keep track of things despite my comings and goings, turning it off and on going from room to room and so on. The story was engaging and the narrator fabulous. If the story is engaging and easy to follow I frankly don't care what it is about, and despite not being much of a detective/mystery follower I delighted in this book. Ear candy for the sweet tooth so to speak. The characters are very well developed and it would be easy to imagine some of the characters themselves being the subject of their own "series spinoffs." And much applause to the narrator, a GREAT job making a fun book even more fun. All in all a great little "read" which will serve to make me a Hiaasen fan from now on.

Classic Hiaasen

Carl Hiaasen is knock-down funny and those who enjoy his brand of humor will not be disappointed with Double Whammy. The characters are great, the situations are hilariously unbelievable and the irreverence flows like honey. And George Wilson's narration is over the top. A great listen.

A totally fun listen

First I've tried from Carl Hiaasen, and what a fun book it is. It's a slapstick kind of drama, with murder, mystery and a crazy bunch of characters that will give you a good laugh here and there. How he blends the murders with mad capped fun, is beyond me, but this author does an excellent job. The narrator has great delivery (in a dry sort of way) of the personalities of this zany group. I did read some of this book, to speed things up, but have to confess that I enjoyed listening to it more. Having grown up in Florida, makes it easy to relate to the land schemes, get rich tourist traps, and attitudes of the book. Nice to see some humor put to it.

TERRIBLE NARRATION!!!!!

The narration was so terrible I could not enjoy the story. Ever time I was getting into the story Mr. Wilson swollowed irrating me so much I became distracted. I will never buy another audiobook George Wilson is narrating! I primarily paid to listen the narrator's body functions!
