Publisher's Summary

For 25 years, Positive Discipline has been the gold standard reference for grown-ups working with children. Now Jane Nelsen, distinguished psychologist, educator, and mother of seven, has written a revised and expanded edition.

The key to positive discipline is not punishment, she tells us, but mutual respect. Nelsen coaches parents and teachers to be both firm and kind, so that any child - from a three-year-old toddler to a rebellious teenager - can learn creative cooperation and self-discipline with no loss of dignity. Inside you'll discover how to:

  • Bridge communication gaps
  • Defuse power struggles
  • Avoid the dangers of praise
  • Enforce your message of love
  • Build on strengths, not weaknesses
  • Hold children accountable with their self-respect intact
  • Teach children not what to think but how to think
  • Win cooperation at home and at school
  • Meet the special challenge of teen misbehavior

Terrible audio

The book itself is really great. The narrator is terrible! I have listened to over 70 audiobooks over a wide range of topics I drive an hour each way to work and I pass the time with audio books. However this narrator has a “wet” raspy voice. It is unbearable I ended up getting a hard copy version. This what happens when authors narrates there own books they ruin it.

I would rather pour ice cold water in my ears every day for a year than listen to this audiobook for one hour.

A must for parents

Jane Nelsen teaches anyone that would be a child caregiver how to better discipline while lifting the child up rather then tearing them down.

Boring

This is the first book I want to trade in. As a stressed out mom of a 2yo and 1yo, this book isn't for me. There were a lot of "DUH" things in the book. The proper terms for teaching children things aren't helpful. It was also quite confusing that she kept referring to chapters we hadn't even read yet.

Exactly the wrong approach...

I had good intuition on how to raise my child. Then I bought this book and went horribly wrong with my child for short period. I saw the relationship between me and my child deteriorate. It wasn't until I read unconditional parenting that I was set free again.

Divorce mom

My daughter’s psychologist recommended this book after a sudden change in family structure. It has a lot of practical advice, my only complaint is that the Audiobook is divided into chapters differently than the book (Chapter 1 has 27 audiobook chapters) so it is hard to make reference between book and audiobook.

The concept of the book and the overall information were both awesome! The problem was that it was read really slowly!!! It almost took forever to complete it!!

This is a book to keep for life!

It's not enough to read this book just for once! It really is an encyclopedia to learn about Positive Discipline, I recommend it for each and everyone who deals with children, whether you're a parent, a teacher, or a caregiver. This is sure a book to keep for life!

Interesting ideas, poor presentation

I highly recommend the first chapter of this book, hence I gave it 2 stars instead of 1. Afterwards, the book appears to have interesting ideas but it is written like a school manual. It is very hard to follow.

The performance of the author does not help either with listening to lists of bullet points. She is monotonous and does not succeed in gaining your attention. If you are not a very good reader then get someone else to narrate your book.

Too bad, I had high hopes for this book but it’s execution is really poor although the ideas are good.

Excellent book & examples

I love this booked. I’ve already shared it with five people. It’s got such simple yet helpful ideas & principles. I’ve already changed how I deal with misbehaviour in our home & im planning on introducing family meetings when our son is old enough. Thank you
