Publisher's Summary

Current child-rearing techniques seek to develop children who are confident, self-assured, and unafraid to speak their minds-lions instead of lambs. Although largely positive, this shift has brought with it some very serious problems in our children's behavior. Without going back to an authoritarian model, Joe Newman has developed new ways of helping children develop the ability to self-regulate without undermining their confidence, and individuality.

“One of the best books on child-rearing. Joe Newman describes a cultural shift that has reinforced anxiety and behavior disorders in children by negating parental authority. Even more important, he provides specific, non-punitive ways for parents to help their kids by taking back their authority. Filled with examples and experiences from the author’s own life as a child with A.D.H.D., the book is a treasure-trove of useful information.” (Barry Michels, psychotherapist and New York Times bestselling author of The Tools)

“This book is packed with useful information. It is an insightful and practical guide for managing children. I would recommend it to any parent.” (L. Alan Sroufe, Professor Emeritus Ph.D. University of Minnesota)

Raising Lions challenges us to re-examine our interactions and relationships with children, re-think the root causes of behavior problems, and find new ways to support healthy, happy development.

For over 20 years Joe Newman has worked with children, parents, teachers, and administrators to help them understand and improve child behavior.

Every parent should read this!

I am a pediatric occupational therapist, and the principles of this book have been incredibly valuable to my practice. Bottom line- it works. I’m so glad I read this before having kids of my own. Thanks Joe!

Most useful book on parenting

Exactly what I was looking for while raising two little girls with big strong personalities. Filled the gaps and explained exactly what was needed to get children to develop self control. Highly recommended.

He hits the nail on the head with this book

If you have a strong willed child you will discipline your child better with more patience and understanding after reading this book. This author has a way of delivering the message in a very effective way and presents a real life story from a child he worked with attached to each point. He does not forget the details when retelling about these children he has worked with and the stories of the tantrums were spot on with my strong willed child. This book helped me understand my own behavior and that of my 2nd son, and resulted in a breakthrough for me as I have battled my own nature with behavior and also being a breakthrough with being able to nurture and love my child while disciplining with compassion. Thank you so much for writing this book. I love the verbal jui jujitsu concept.

Terrific and so helpful

This book gave me tools and strategies that work, not just information, and it also gave me the answers to things that just didn’t make sense - such as why what my parents did for me doesn’t work with my kids, and why my wife’s style of parenting is better sometimes, and mine is better sometimes, but there were shortfalls to both. Plus Joe’s narration really makes the stories resonate. Thank you so much for this book Joe!

Wish I had listened to this book when my son was younger!

I’ve read so many parenting books and this is by far the most impactful with my son. I’ve been practicing the Whole Brain approach to parenting, which is awesome, but this meet the hand approach that Joe describes is the missing piece in parenting for us. I have recommended this book to all of my friends and family who have kids.

Cause and effect - fab!

Loved this - firm foundation for consequence based parenting to raise strong willed children. My toddler is already taking the lessons on board through practise of Joe's teachings.

Amazing book

I recommend anyone with children. Who works with children or is thinking about it should read this book. I feel like I’ve learned so much about not only what my child wants and needs but how I’ve been failing to meet those demands.

Old school discipline

Sadly this book pushes a very archaic parenting style. It’s all about ‘time out’ and the will of the adult forcing itself over the will of the child. Very old school. Having said that I did find a few gems and in here.

Techniques that work

This audible really made me not want to stop listening. An eye opener listen, to the different phases of a child’s development and great techniques I’ve now implemented into my own parenting. I especially liked how he gave detailed scenarios, as well as the importance of the type of words to use when dealing with children and their behaviour. Thanks Joe Newman.

Best advice and clear directs there is.

I could go on about this book in so many ways.
How I identified myself as a child in his examples and how I would have benefited from this kid of action instead of being suppressed or largely left to my own devices.
How my little lion has always been testing his power and all the ways the other method over used where ineffective.
And how all how this worked for all three of my children who have very different personalities 11 (lion) 9 (lamb) 1.5 (lion cub) haha even on him!
But best of yet it so eloquently articulated all the things I had always believed and tried to do and couldn't convey to my husband who was inadvertently making things worse and landing us on totally different pages from where we started.
A short audiobook listened together in a car ride and our house is 100% more harmonious and can get on with enjoyment and gratitude for the hard work we all put into our children while letting them be who they are.
Thanks endlessly Joe not just for me but all the kids out there who don't have to be in anguish.
