Publisher's summary

Don't ever let it break you.

The United Eastern States is crumbling. The fragile house of cards that Lee Harden and Angela Houston have built has begun to fall. Lee is up against a ticking clock, as he is recalled from Texas and given the last thing in the world that he wants: a promotion.

Forced into a command role, Major Harden is thrust into a sharp learning curve that goes against every instinct he's developed over years of fighting. As Lee races to find his footing in a mire of shifting loyalties and opposing goals, Safe Zones are being overrun by massive hordes of primals exhibiting strange behaviors and uncanny levels of intelligence, and Greeley is moving toward an invasion of the UES. The envoys from Canada and the United Kingdom know it - but they're refusing to take sides and give Lee the intelligence he desperately needs.

As the tides of war reach the doors of the UES, horrific secrets are revealed that will change the future of their fight for survival. Friends become enemies, and enemies become allies. But no matter what happens, no matter what - or who - he loses, Lee can't let it break him. He must remain defiant to the last.

Coming Back Around

DJ Molles knocked it out with bringing the series back around to it's roots of Project Hometown. His character development is some of my favorite in fiction and he has fleshed out so many well-rounded and realistic characters, flaws and all. The Remaining showed his talent for gritting through the fiction with descriptive and entertaining writing, and Harden has taken you with Lee through the depression and anger of a soldier with bloodlust and back to his purpose. I have enjoyed how he has captured the individual greed and flaws of human nature, showing multiple sides to a conflict while still fully supporting the protagonist as a struggling good guy stereotype. Well written and bringing the series together. Bravo on another great work of fiction.

Lee Harden is back

I feel like Lee Harden is one walking scar. The guy has been put through the ringer since vacating his bunker in the first series, and running into the characters who evolve into the leadership of the eastern states. This book feels more like filler for the coming confrontation, with the Eastern states on the ropes, betrayed, and put through the forge to remove any weakness. At the same time, Lee Harden is finding his humanity again, and a new purpose, after letting revenge and the fight be his main objective for much of the series. There are a few different threads that will hopefully come together in the next book.

I'm trying to figure out who is the bigger threat at this time: The US government or the Primals. While Lee Harden is dealing with former, Sam Ryder is dealing with the latter. I keep wanting Lee to take Sam under his wing and turn him into a hard nosed combatant like Lee, but Sam seems to have a softer heart while trying to traverse the pitfalls of being a teenager raised in an era of monsters and madmen.

I'm still reeling

I have followed DJ Molles "The Remaining " and "Lee Harden " series since the beginning. Christian Rummel is masterful in his narration with his voice acting serving as the perfect vehicle for the author's ever improving prose. I almost didn't give this a 5 star rating just bc of the emotional sucker punches this beast threw at me, time and again, esp towards the later chapters. All in all, this is a journey through the highs and the lows, victories and defeats , Joy's (if you can call them that) and sorrows of characters that I have grown to genuinely care for. Now I must wait another 6 mos or more for Mr Molles and Mr Rummel to come together once again and plunge me into the depths of Lee Harden's next nail biting adventure. Loved the book , bring on the next one.
