A cultural phenomenon that has helped heal millions of readers, this modern classic holds the key to understanding codependency and unlocking its hold on your life.

As heard on Glennon Doyle’s We Can Do Hard Things podcast.

Melody Beattie’s compassionate and insightful look into codependency—the concept of losing oneself in the name of helping another—has guided millions of readers toward the understanding that they are powerless to change anyone but themselves and that caring for the self is where healing begins.

Is someone else's problem your problem? If, like so many others, you've lost sight of your own life in the drama of tending to a loved one’s self-destructive behavior, you may be codependent––and you may find yourself in this book. With personal reflections, exercises, and instructive stories drawn from Beattie’s own life and the lives of those she’s counseled, Codependent No More helps you break old patterns and maintain healthy boundaries and offers a clear and achievable path to healing, hope, freedom, and happiness.

This revised edition includes an all-new chapter on trauma and anxiety—subjects Beattie has long felt necessary to address within the context of codependency—making it even more relevant today than it was when it first entered the national conversation over 35 years ago.

Editorial Review

Start here to build better boundaries
The 1986 classic Codependent No More by Melody Beattie has a special place in my library. To me, it’s a quintessential well-being title for anyone who struggles with putting themselves first. My first copy was passed down to me nearly half a decade ago by a close friend who raved about how it had helped her establish healthy boundaries with her loved ones—just what I needed at the time. While conversations about the validity of the term "codependent" have emerged since the Reagan administration, I still include myself among the countless readers and listeners who have successfully used Beattie’s techniques for prioritizing self-care to jumpstart healing. I’m most looking forward to a brand new chapter on trauma recovery in this modern recording of a legendary self-help book. — Rachael X.

I loved how this can be affirming and help to see new options. The audio version is helpful when you need to hear it someone else’s voice rather than reading it in your own.

My beautiful sister suggested I read this and when I checked my personal library, there it was! initially I was thinking, "this doesn't apply to me. I am not married to an abuser or surrounded by addiction" but I hung in there based on Lisa's recommendation. Boy, am I so happy I did!

What I started to realize was that I was raised by parents of dysfunction, addiction, and religion and many of the behaviors that caused me so much frustration, was probably learned by watching them all my life. Whether or not I want to admit it, I am a codependent and despite all my hours of helping others and people pleasing, I was feeling unappreciated and used up. If that is how your feeling, read this book now and save yourself years of self abuse and frustration.
