Publisher's summary

number-one New York Times best-selling author John C. Maxwell believes that any setback, whether professional or personal, can be turned into a step forward when you possess the right tools to turn a loss into a gain. Drawing on nearly fifty years of leadership experience, Dr. Maxwell provides a roadmap for winning by examining the eleven elements that constitute the DNA of learners who succeed in the face of problems, failure, and losses.

1. Humility - The Spirit of Learning
2. Reality - The Foundation of Learning
3. Responsibility - The First Step of Learning
4. Improvement - The Focus of Learning
5. Hope - The Motivation of Learning
6. Teachability - The Pathway of Learning
7. Adversity - The Catalyst of Learning
8. Problems - The Opportunities of Learning
9. Bad Experiences - The Perspective for Learning
10. Change - The Price of Learning
11. Maturity - The Value of Learning

Learning is not easy during down times, it takes discipline to do the right thing when something goes wrong. As John Maxwell often points out - experience isn't the best teacher; evaluated experience is.

It takes a good fall to remember why you want to stand.

I love this book. It is another great piece of work by John C Maxwell. He does have an excellent way of taking the cookie jar off the top shelf and putting it where you can reach it.

I highly recommend this book as an addition to people in Recovery. It is a great way to see the same principles of learning as you find in 12 Step programs including lessons on humility and pride. It discusses how to deal with adversity in a positive way and how to overcome the things we call failures to make them learning experiences without damaging self talk that runs us back to whatever we go to to lick our wounds in an unhealthy manner.

It is an awesome book from a great man who knows how to make it easy to learn the things to be successful in anything you put your mind to.

Good book for reflecting, bad narration

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

No. I've heard Maxwell narrate a number of his own books and this does not capture the reflection I'd expect. I feel like the meaning is diminished or changed as a result.

What did you like best about this story?

Good things to reflect upon.

Would you be willing to try another one of Chris Sorensen’s performances?

No - found it quite distracting.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Chapter on humility.

Must listen!

There's is so much insight in this book that you must listen too it, probably several times in order to get all the value out of it, this much wisdom packed into one small book doesn't come around too often! Enjoy!!!

Not what i expected

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

This book was recommended by my trainer as one of his all time favorite books. Its very slow and mundane. Not getting much from it. I'll be deleting before I finish it.

Would you be willing to try another one of Chris Sorensen’s performances?

Probably not. Did not gain anything out of this book. Maybe for someone else that's in a different place in their life.

What character would you cut from Sometimes You Win - Sometimes You Learn?

The author/narrator just tells stories...

It was on point

It did exactly what I thought it would. Refreshed my motivation and kept me full of can-do power.
And as you know, John can trusted to not come from some crazy pop-psychology angle, only solid teaching.

New Perspective

The content is strong. Encourage us to look into the past to evaluate our experiences. Under a new light we can bring that to the future and adjust the course, forgive ourselves for mistakes made and carry on. Often times we don't realize and unconscious level how these experiences are anchors in our process moving forward.

I will recommend everyone to read this book and visit it every so often.
