Why do some people achieve great personal success, yet never succeed in building a business or making an impact in their organization? John C. Maxwell knows the answer. According to Maxwell, the greatest leadership principle that he has ever learned in over 35 years of leadership is that those closest to the leader will determine the success level of that leader. It’s not enough for a leader to have vision, energy, drive, and conviction. If you want to see your dream come to fruition, you must learn how to develop the leaders around you.

We all have a longing to be significant. We want to make a contribution, to be a part of something noble and purposeful. But many people wrongly believe significance is unattainable. They worry that it's too big for them to achieve. That they have to have an amazing idea, be a certain age, have a lot of money, or be powerful or famous to make a real difference. The good news is that none of those things is necessary for you to achieve significance and create a lasting legacy.

Publisher's summary
In 1993, John C. Maxwell's now-classic work revolutionized the way leaders are made. By examining the differences between leadership styles, Maxwell outlines principles for inspiring, motivating, and influencing others from any type of leadership position - including as a business executive, a church leader, a teacher, or even a parent.
Now, the author has returned to his best seller to include the leadership insights and practices he has learned in the decades since the book first appeared. Thoroughly revised and with two additional chapters, Developing the Leader Within You 2.0 has updated these foundational principles and promises to provide for both new listeners as well as longtime fans of the original book the necessary wisdom to help any leader and organization succeed in fostering integrity, self-discipline, and effecting positive change.
Develop your vision. Develop your value. Develop the leader within you.

Practical leadership
At first I was hesitant about Maxwell's work. I am not Christian, I am not at all religious, and I like to talk, fast. What first felt like slow progress with his book, turned into valuable lessons on leadership that will have a lasting impact on my style. I have been grilled at work for suggesting that we may not have the right people on the job. "Impossible," they say, as they believe any leader could turn anyone into a success. I disagree. My usual retort is that we mine as well go pick up some day workers at home depot, because we must have messiahs for leaders. (I work in software research on the edge of computer science). Maxwell discusses the 80/20 rule in a way that I hadn't thought of before. He invests 80% of his managerial time into 20% of his direct staff, meaning 1 in 5 will get his attention, and he expects to get 80% of the gains from that 20%. This is because he finds that only 1 in 5 people are worthy, capable, or willing to be coached and grow. I've been trying to do what my manager says to do, which is to bring everyone up equally. As he puts it, "what a mistake!"
I absolutely love this book.

A must have for any level leader.
Would you listen to Developing the Leader Within You 2.0 again? Why?
Like Johns other books... they all inspire me to go back and listen to over and over.
What other book might you compare Developing the Leader Within You 2.0 to and why?
This compliments Johns other leadership books, and is similar to "The 5 Levels of Leadership." It's a must have addition to his collection.
Have you listened to any of John C. Maxwell’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have many of Johns other books and he is simply a pleasure to listen to. He is actually my favorite narrator and author.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I could easily listen to this in one setting if time permitted.
Any additional comments?
This is my 8th book by John Maxwell, and I can't emphasis my recommendation for this book (and his others) enough. "Developing the Leader Within You 2.0" is a home run...The book covers the 5 levels of leadership in great detail while simplifying the process. Rather than get into the details of the book - I will say this... Whenever I recommend anything on leadership development I ALWAYS direct them to John Maxwell - and this book will be my 1st recommendation no matter what level of a leader I'm working with.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would recommend this book to a friend and will do so for my colleagues as well. John C Maxwell does a good job of providing a great list of opportunities to improve your leadership and guidelines by which to do so. The majority of the first portion of the book up until the last couple of chapters offers lots of great references to other leaders and quotes as well as good instructions on where your mindset should be when thinking as a Leader. My favorite sections discuss the levels of leadership, and how you grow the influence you have and the type of leadership you provide as you push to the next level. I also really appreciated the concept of consciously thinking farther and bigger for your organization.
A couple of chapters at the end are a bit too soft in their advice, but still this is a great read.
Have you listened to any of John C. Maxwell’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I enjoyed John's narration; it is clear he is a talented orator.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Man conveys lifelong lessons on growing your mindset to become a leader.

motivational
John Maxwell is a great author and leader. You can tell by his books that he's very passionate about helping people. He's a smart man that has read many books and listened to many advisors on the topic. He seems enthusiastic to share his ideas. As a female it's hard to put his ideas into practical action. It requires that everyone else has the same idealism as you do and that all other factors in your life allow you to focus just on your flock.. I do like the overall theme that being a good leader means being selfless. You need to put the needs of who you are leading ahead of your own personal agenda for wealth, status or recognition.

Lead by example
John C Maxwell's books on leadership can arguably be called "the bible" on the subject. One never truly master all the concepts of leadership however with consistent practice, one can awaken that spirit. The world is crying for a strong leadership and the more of us get to work on our leadership skills, I believe that we can make this earth a better place.

Inspiring
This book has inspired and challenged me to reach the potential I was born for.
The book being read by the author himself also motivated me in listening to it as I usually prefer hard copies to read instead of audio books.
John Maxwell is funny and full of wisdom in what he wrote down in this book. I've made notes that I’ll always refer to in order to keep developing and growing in my leadership.

Story
Why do some people achieve great personal success, yet never succeed in building a business or making an impact in their organization? John C. Maxwell knows the answer. According to Maxwell, the greatest leadership principle that he has ever learned in over 35 years of leadership is that those closest to the leader will determine the success level of that leader. It’s not enough for a leader to have vision, energy, drive, and conviction. If you want to see your dream come to fruition, you must learn how to develop the leaders around you.
