Publisher's summary

What seems like just a common, no-harm-done excuse - "It's not my fault!" - is often a dangerous trap, say Drs. Henry Cloud and John Townsend, because people don't recognize what the blaming mindset does to them. It not only keeps them from overcoming the effects of all that they can't control-like other people, circumstances and genetics-but separates them from a solution. And when they give away the ownership of their life, they end up losing the one opportunity they have to fulfill their dreams and enjoy God's best.

Using eight principles, a variety of true stories and their years of experience as professional psychologists, Cloud and Townsend enlighten readers on how to make empowering choices-and how to build the life they want to live. It may seem impossible but it's true: taking personal responsibility is not only liberating, it is the best-and perhaps the only-way for a person to get what they really want out of life.

TOP BOOK of 2009

This is MY FAVOURITE BOOK for 2009. Each year I choose my favourite out of the 20-30 I read/listen to.
This book was revolutionary for me in two directions. 1) inward - helping me to 'Man Up' and own my situation, whether it be my fault or not. 2) outward - It makes it very clear to see why people are having their issues, and how to help them see that they need to OWN their situation too. Helping people OUT of Victim Mentality INTO Victory mentality.
It's NOT my fault, but it IS my problem.
It's MY job to deal with it.

All the God talk turned me off quickly

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Christians might enjoy it.

What was most disappointing about Henry Cloud and John Townsend ’s story?

I was disappointed that a book about personal responsibility would reference an imaginary friend.

Would you be willing to try another one of Henry Cloud and John Townsend ’s performances?

Probably not.

Any additional comments?

I wish they had been more upfront about the fact this is a christian book. Nothing against christians or the religious but I was expecting something substantial, not references to the garden of edan.

Way to look at what responsibility is.

I read and listened to the book. very insightful. you only own your will. that is what you can control. nothing else.

Not what I expected

The examples weren't varying enough to include a big audience and the topic seemed to transgress. I thought this was more about the victim mentality but almost seemed like the authors reaction to their clients that play victim namely for their weight and for their unwanted relationship status. As an audiobook it's hard to follow because the authors jump around quickly back into examples. If the book were a fruit it would be an orange, lots of juicy examples/fillers but not a lot of fleshy bits to back it all up. The most valuable points I took away from the book: writing down what you're grateful for each day can help you be less of a complainer and a big ah-ha moment, when we focus on ideals and what we think should've happened we're really denying the reality where we can actually solve the problem.

Wish I would have found this book a long time ago

This book was extremely helpful and seeing where I'm stuck in life, and where I've been stuck in life or just needed motivation. would recommend this book to anybody who has codependent issues, bad relationship issues (can't seem to find the Right one), or is having issues with coworkers. Excellent excellent book.

Listened twice this weekend!

I listened to the audio version twice this wknd and it was very helpful. I'm excited to read the book now and to journal along with it. Thank you for covering so many topics in one book. Life is beautifully complex, so the variation of situations covered herein are relatable, practical and helpful!

Narrator was racing the words

Narrator was racing the script. It was distracting and tiring to listen to. He needed to speak slower.

Not for me

The 1st quarter of the audio book sounded promising because it was identifying why we see things the way we do. But as you journey through the book ever more the narrator kept referencing god, the bible and jesus over and over which led me to dosing of to sleep.
