Publisher's Summary

In the best-selling tradition of Sloan Crosley's I Was Told There'd Be Cake and Mindy Kaling's Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, here is a collection of humorous essays on what it's like to be unabashedly awkward in a world that regards introverts as hapless misfits and black as cool.

"My name is 'J' and I'm awkward--and black. Someone once told me those were the two worst things anyone could be. That someone was right. Where do I start?"

Being an introvert in a world that glorifies cool isn't easy. But when Issa Rae, the creator of the Shorty Award-winning hit series The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl, is that introvert--whether she's navigating love, work, friendships, or rapping-- it sure is entertaining. Now, in this debut collection of essays written in her witty and self-deprecating voice, Rae covers everything from cybersexing in the early days of the Internet to deflecting unsolicited comments on weight gain, from navigating the perils of eating out alone and public displays of affection to learning to accept yourself --natural hair and all.

A reflection on her own unique experiences as a cyber pioneer yet universally appealing, The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl is a book no one--awkward or cool, black, white, or other--will want to miss.

Loved

One of my new favorite books! I laughed and cried while listening to Issa Rae's story. She's so brilliant and funny! I related to her in so many ways and I am grateful to have come across this inspirational book. I am truly rooting for her and she has made me even more of a fan. I would recommend this book not just for awkward black girls like myself but anyone who wants to listen to an intelligent young women's take on her life and journey.

I had no problem listening to and enjoying myself with this audible. Clear and smooth transitions and flowed nicely. Hoping she keeps the awkward movement going and her overall flow of creativity.

The show was great and so is the book!

I have been a fan of ABG for years. I am sure the Audible is much more enjoyable than reading the book. Issa is being Issa, in her classically awkward and smart wittily manner.

I wanted this to be a better book

I really like Issa Rae's TV show, so I got the book. It offers a great perspective, and I truly enjoyed most of it. There were other parts where I thought a stronger editor should have cleaned up repetitive phrasing, reorganized the chapters in a way that made more sense, and shortened some of the less interesting tales. Issa Rae is charming and observant. It just needed some shaping. Also, I was shocked that she referred to one of her friends as having "chinky eyes." What?

Quirky fun relatable

Loved it. Issa put into what's what I couldn't articulate about the awkward moments in life. Thoroughly enjoyed. Genuinely laughed. Recommend for anyone. You definitely do not have to be black either.
