Publisher's summary

In this hilarious and heartfelt memoir, award-winning, multi-talented entertainer Jamie Foxx shares the story of being raised by his no-nonsense grandmother, the glamour and pitfalls of life in Hollywood, and the lessons he took from both worlds to raise his two daughters.

Jamie Foxx has won an Academy Award and a Grammy Award, laughed with sitting presidents, and partied with the biggest names in hip-hop. But he is most proud of his role as father to two very independent young women, Corinne and Anelise. Jamie might not always know what he’s doing when it comes to raising girls - especially when they talk to him about TikTok (PlikPlok?) and don’t share his enthusiasm for flashy Rolls Royces - but he does his best to show up for them every single day.

Luckily, he has a strong example to follow: his beloved late grandmother, Estelle Marie Talley. Jamie learned everything he knows about parenting from the fierce woman who raised him: As he puts it, she’s “Madea before Tyler Perry put on the pumps and the gray wig”.

In Act Like You Got Some Sense - a title inspired by Estelle - Jamie shares up close and personal stories about the tough love and old-school values he learned growing up in the small town of Terrell, Texas; his early days trying to make it in Hollywood; the joys and challenges of achieving stardom; and how each phase of his life shaped his parenting journey. Hilarious, poignant, and always brutally honest, this is Jamie Foxx like we’ve never seen him before.

Critic reviews

"In this debut full of genuine reflection and heartfelt humor, actor and comedian Foxx riffs on parenting ('You ain’t ready for it') and the life experiences that gradually helped shape him as a father.... Foxx writes in a jovial manner, with jokes flying constantly.... Yet where this book truly excels is in its honesty, offering an intimate look past Jamie Foxx the famous actor to reveal a relatable figure." (Publishers Weekly, starred review)

"A practical, sometimes profane, always entertaining guide to the fine art of parenting." (Kirkus Reviews)

"In cheerfully meandering stories, Foxx displays his comedic timing and pacing and is always entertaining, blending the folksy yet hard-edged wisdom of his adoptive grandmother with hard-won, more worldly 'New Dad' sensibilities.... Foxx's parenting-advice book is the equivalent of a vitamin-packed smoothie: sweet, fun, and easy to enjoy, full of slyly concealed nourishment and goodness." (Booklist)

This is a great movie with no picture

I love the way Jamie narrated this book because he acted out every chapter which made it magical. Especially the voices he does. It was like watching a movie with no picture. That’s the true actor within him. Awesome book 🤩🤗

Amazing Dad stories

It's inspiring how Jamie allowed us a look into his journey thus far. His stories with finding how to parent each daughter differently was refreshing. We know all people struggle with parenting but when you see someone always "put together" you think they have everything in order. Well not Jamie and he is so willing to let you know how he messed up and grew from it.

Jamie Foxx has a book!!

Jamie gives a inside look of what fatherhood look like for him.. while somewhat giving a glimpse into his private life.. he manages to bring out a mixture of emotions.. The sharing of Annalise poetry was a true gift.. I found myself wanting to read more.. There seems to be so much depth to Jamie that I longed for in this book... but it is a good read.. check it out.

Life lessons without the beat down!

Highly recommend. Loved the book. Finished in one day while knocking off my to do list. Had to rewind a few times or restart a few chapters because I didn't want to miss a word. Much respect to his grandmother who not just raised him, but raised him up! She gave him just enough security, love and respect, empathy and wisdom, drive and courage, physical and mental skills to give him the chance to succeed in life and help others do the same. The man is a thinker, and not just the crazy idea having kind, although he's had a few. Now, he's passing it on by teaching his daughter's how to think wisely for themselves, and now the general public. Thanks for sharing Foxes!

Heart Warming

This was a great book. So glad Jamie read it himself. No one else could have done it better.
I’ve always been a fan, but now I have love for the love he has for his family.
I have Talley’s in my family too!
Continued success and blessings

Great book Love Jamie/Eric

I have been passionate about acting and my dreams since I was 6 -8 I'm old. I did not have that same love and push Jamie had, however I share similar life experiences with my parent as you did Jamie. I'm also from Dallas and the Southern Sector lol is where my roots are along with other areas of Dallas. I'm familiar with Terrell my Brother in law is from Terrell and we have been visiting Terrell since I was 14. That was many years ago now fast forward yrs later my daughter is 7 years old the same age I was when my dreams were big. She wants to be an actress as I did and I don't wont her stuck in Dallas like your granny felt . Like me she is a natural and have a knack for this. She is talented and smart , loves to improv and create her own platform and very good at what she does Addison Austin. Recently about 1yr and half ago I got her signed to Take 3 Agency and she is now SAG AFTRA member, She is on a exclusive contract and can work with anyone however I have struggled to figure out where to go and what to do now. I feel with her as I felt for myself (" if I just get in front of the right person and right time I can sale myself on my own I just need a chance""). I try to support her in everything she wants to become but Im stuck right now and its scaring me. I tell myself she needs a manager she needs someone who can drive her in the right direction. She so full of light and her light shines so bright and I don't want it to dim. I'm successful and I don't want to let her down as a parent knowing im her biggest cheerleader. This book helped to know im not alone. Thank you Jamie!! Ive watched your journey from Stand up comedy to the Jamie Foxx show to all your movies from comedy to drama. You have done remarkable and making Terrell/Dallas Texas proud. Now I challenge you Now to open a Agency in the Dallas area for either youth and or youth and adults based. It should be strictly based on the entertainment and arts film/Musician/Improv/Comedian etc. Dallas has talent but not enough exposure and a lot of people are willing to travel and go for it but still need the right direction. We are Stagnate in this area but have so much offer. So I challenge you Jamie and I would quit my job today to assist with this project because I want to pave a way and make a difference not just for my daughter but for everyone who deserves a chance. Thank You and Great book a MUST READ!!
