THE ATOMIC RISE OF ATOMIC HABITS

As anyone who knows me will tell you, I’m a person who tends to get caught up in emotion. I feel sometimes like a walking whirlwind of feelings, an open nerve, my days often changing drastically depending on the rise and tide of my moods. I pay attention to my intuition and believe deeply in the things we cannot see. It is for all of these reasons, that despite this book being recommended by friend after friend in the year following its release date, I avoided reading it. "It’s too practical," I thought. "It’s too X + Y equals Z." Snooze.

Fast forward to April of 2020—a few years since the book’s initial boom—and I am feeling sluggish and supremely unproductive in a pandemic-induced haze. In my now-virtual writers' group, we chat about what we are all reading. One member perks up, looking a bit more alert than the rest of us, and credits Atomic Habits by James Clear for taking her out of her creative slump and helping her feel a sense of control in this eerie moment we all found ourselves living in.

I can’t say what it was, exactly, about this particular recommendation that drew me in. Was it the time frame or the sense of calm I felt emanating from this usually chaotic person on the other end of the screen? Or was it just that I finally decided to listen to what people were telling me? Either way, the next night I decided to download the audiobook, which is narrated by the author. About 20 minutes after pressing "play" on this book that seemed to have been following me for years, popping up all over the place like meerkats in the jungle, I wished deeply that I had listened sooner.

Surprisingly, the practicality of Atomic Habits turned out to be just what I needed. The small steps suddenly felt important. Clear’s analogies—particularly. one about not getting mad at ice that doesn’t melt when you heat it to 29 and 30 degrees because it will melt entirely at 32—resonated with me as a writer who works on her craft daily, and who regularly submits to publications only to be rejected a very high percentage of the time. Things started to click. One day the ice will melt. Getting up every day at 5:30 to write for a precious few hours in the solitude of the early morning is not for nothing.

The concrete steps a person can take daily to achieve their goals and the processes that are needed in order to realize dreams are just as important as the overarching, emotional vision we all have for our successes. And being practical doesn’t mean to stop listening to your heart. All it means is that now, in addition to your spirit, you also have tangible steps you can take every day that will bring you just a little bit closer to the reality you have always imagined.

Pretty good

The only thing that would make this audio book better would be to remove the dozens and dozens of website plugs that seem to jump out all the time. Other than that, the info and delivery was good. I will be listening to this book often and recommending it to others. Great work!

Abundance of clear information

Though I can definitely see how boring this book can seem, once you get into it you’ll learn that you have to get pass the boredom to really gwt something out of it. Highly recommend for anyone struggling with financial difficulties, addiction, or any person that feels the need to do better. Thank you, James Clear.

Great book!

One thing I dislike more than anything when it comes to self-help books is when the author writes 100+ pages about why you should become a better person but doesn't give practical tools and methods for accomplishing it. The reason I gave this book 5 stars is because James Clear spends the MAJORITY of this book detailing tools and methods for achieving better habits and also maintaining them. He breaks down habit formation into four categories, goes into detail about what they mean, and offers practical steps to utilizing them to either destroy bad habits or reinforce good ones.
Basically, if you're like me (someone who really wishes they could change their bad habits and replace them with good habits but has no idea where to start) you will love this book.
Is it a life-changer? I'm not sure yet because I just finished it 5 minutes ago. However, I will be using these strategies for the rest of my life.

Edit:
I did myself a favor and read a few of the other reviews for this book (so glad I didn't do that before reading as I probably would've missed out on it based on some negative opinions). If something as small as him mentioning his website is going to bother you or leave you dissatisfied then don't read this book. In fact, don't ever try to achieve anything ever again for the rest of your life. If something THAT small is going to put you off then there is no telling how many small things in your life are preventing you from improvement. Start with an open mind. Read this book, take notes, build a plan, implement that plan, and if that plan fails THEN only can you adequately criticize this book.

LIFE CHANGING for my ADHD Brain!

I’ve struggled my whole life with routine and creating habits I stick to. This book breaks it down on a way I can actually implement and stick to because it addresses who we are on a fundamental level and how our habits are a reflection of this.

Life Changing!!

Due to a very mentally abusive childhood I have spent most of my adult life running from anxiety, and the fear that I will always be noticeably behind the starting line in all areas of life compared to everyone else. At 39 years old, I could not believe this was still was still such a force in my life. I have a wonderful husband, two beautiful children, a huge church community full of friends, I pray, listen to my Bible, exercise and push past my feelings of anxiety to make sure we are involved in plenty of things. Why was this still such a problem? In June 2020, after an anxiety attack in the middle of the night, which we thought was a result of undiagnosed asthma, my husband insisted that I see my doctor about it. She diagnosed me with anxiety, not asthma, and I began taking Zoloft. I also began counseling with a Christian counselor. She recommended Atomic Habits. I was hooked in the first few minutes. I had never looked at life as a series of habits which can transform your identity. I had always blown off tiny changes. Not anymore. This book has changed the filter through which I view LIFE. Yes, I am on anxiety medication and occasionally receiving Christian counseling, but I am convinced that Atomic Habits is the reason I feel like I now have a new path forward. God brought this book into my life. I can’t thank James Clear enough for writing Atomic Habits. As frustrating as it is to be 40 and just now discovering such a powerful tool for success, I am so excited about the possibilities living life with atomic habits will provide going forward. My kids will be listening to this book when they are old enough to understand the content. I can’t stop telling different friends about it. Read this book! It will change your life in positive, productive, successful ways you never could have imagined.
