My genre of choice is dark romance, spicy, even filthy, found family, angsty dramas. This was much more than I ever imagined.

Both main characters had past trauma that caused havoc in their day to day lives. However, they didn’t know that they NEEDED each other to overcome them. Trigger warnings need to be taken very seriously. If you can digest the material, the end result is beautiful. I’m going to read more from this author in the future!

The duet style narrated audiobook was phenomenal! This story came in and ripped my heart wide open! I ached and felt the pain these characters have endured! All while being able to laugh at their banter, swoon, feel their HEAT, and experience the devastating beauty of the healing these characters found in one another. Loved it!

I am kicking myself for not finding this book sooner because this was SO FREAKING GOOD! This was the perfect forbidden dark taboo romance to get me out of my slump.

Ronan just got out of prison and winds up staying at the same cabin as his step niece, Calista, after she loses her place to a fire. They try and keep their distance from one another but of course, that doesn’t work out as they expected.

I went into this on a whim and wasn’t really sure what to expect when I saw it was a taboo, step uncle and niece romance but I was SO SURPRISED! This is so much more than your typical dark romance. We got to dive deep into Ronan and Calista as people and as their story unfolded, we learn that there’s so much more to them than meets the eye. It was so hard to read Ronan’s past and his struggles but watching him overcome it with Calista was everything.

This book is emotional and heartbreaking while also being sooo so spicy! And that plot twist had my JAW on the floor. I was at the edge of my seat with no clue how the story was going to play out and it was SO GOOD.

This book is everything that I expected from a taboo dark romance, and more. Mel truly blew my expectations out of the water with Ronan and Calista. If you are a fan of taboo romance with a hefty serving of emotional damage, then this is the book for you. Included are tropes such as step-uncle/step-niece, overcoming trauma, forced proximity, dark past, degradation, and pierced MCs.

We meet Ronan as he is being released from prison after serving a sentence for murder. Having served a 15-year sentence and being in need of a place to stay, he moves into his brother's secluded cabin until he gets on his feet. Calista winds up in the very same cabin after her house burns down, and she needs a place to crash. She doesn't anticipate having to cohabitate with a convicted murder...or her attraction to him.

Oh my gracious, the tension between these two is ~delectable~! The fact that it is so forbidden just makes that tension even better when it finally snaps. The spice that is packed into this book is SO GOOD, and I enjoyed their exploration of their kinks together. Ronan being touch-averse was an interesting twist, and made the physical aspect of their relationship really sweet amidst the filthy bits.

These two and their families...diving into the trauma that Ronan and Cal experienced at the hands of the people who should have loved them the most, is a lot. My heart shattered on so many occasions for Ronan and the way that he was treated as a child. Cal's mom is truly a piece of work, and I cheered so loud when she finally decides to cut off contact. The dynamic between a strong but deeply caring FMC and a tough-as-nails but vulnerable MMC is fun to experience, and I appreciated how they fought to bring out the best in one another. The way that I RAN to holler at Andi when those twists started coming toward the end!!

I had high expectations from both Sebastian York and Andi Eloise going into this book, and they did not let me down. Andi's voice has a younger quality to it, which works in favor of age gap romance. She does exceptionally well with highly emotional scenes and characters, which consume a large part of this book. Sebastian excels in roles with characters who are damaged, angry, and vengeful, all of which are emotions that Ronan experiences. The duet-style narration allows them to play off of each other and really build on the more tense moments.

Heavy by M.L. Burns lives up to its name in every possible way. This book is dark, intense, and completely consuming from start to finish. It pulls you into a world that feels raw and dangerous, where the emotions are heavy, the chemistry is undeniable, and nothing feels safe—or predictable.

The tension is chef’s kiss. Every interaction simmers with heat, power, and edge, making it impossible to put down. The spice is bold and unapologetic, but it’s the emotional weight behind it that truly elevates the story. It’s not just spicy for the sake of being spicy—there’s depth, conflict, and a darkness that keeps you hooked.

M.L. Burns does an incredible job of balancing grit with vulnerability. The characters are flawed, intense, and unforgettable, and their dynamic is intoxicating. This is the kind of book that makes your heart race, leaves you breathless, and lingers in your mind long after the final page.

If you love dark romance with high stakes, addictive chemistry, and a story that hits hard, Heavy is a must-read. An easy five stars
