Villette (1853), was Charlotte Brontë's third novel and the last published during her lifetime. After an unspecified family catastrophe, the main character, Lucy Snowe, travels to Belgium to teach in a boarding school in the fictional town of Villette. She falls in love with a man she cannot marry, which triggers a nervous breakdown. Ultimately, a new, strong Lucy emerges who becomes the owner and head of her own school.

The narrator of the tale, William Crimsworth, tells a story of courage and ambition among jealousy and envy: Orphaned from a young age, William rejects life in the clergy, and then as a tradesman, to the chagrin of his cruel uncles and elder brother. Instead he pursues a career in education and ends up in Brussels where he meets student/teacher Francis Evans Henri, with whom he falls in love.

Bronte’s The Professor may not provide the same passionate struggles the world has come to know through Jane Eyre, but it does give listeners a glimpse into the everyday struggles of the average man in an era when anything was possible. William Crimsworth takes control of his life at a time when many viewed their lot in life as destiny. Through his career as a professor in Brussels to his quest to find true love, Bronte takes the reader on an unforgettable journey into a romantic bygone era.
