Great Memoir of Steadfast Public Health Physician

This is a wonderful memoir by a long-serving public health physician and Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. He describes his life from his childhood growing up in Brooklyn to his education in Catholic schools and at Cornell Medical College. He started his dedicated career of service at the National Institutes of Health and never left. He describes his experiences as a clinician researcher studying and finding new treatments/preventions for diseases ranging from allergic vasculitis, AIDS, Ebola virus, Zika virus to Covid-19. It is a testament to his even-handed, non-political communication style and integrity that he was able to work constructively with both Republican and Democratic administrations and 5 Presidents (and one other not quite so much). This memoir should be an inspiration to those considering a career in medicine and public health.

I like that he read it himself, I can hear his emotions in his voice. I understand more about what he does in the government, and details about how government’s acts can save a lot more lives than individual!
