Story
Over one million Mayan Indians live and work in Southern Mexico, and six Mayan languages continue to thrive there—languages more than 3,000 years old. In the 1950s, anthropologist Robert Laughlin and his wife Mimi arrived in Chiapas, where Laughlin planned to conduct his linguistic research. At that time, he expected to learn the Tzotzil language without too much trouble, and be welcomed into the indigenous culture.

Story
In 1990, a group of horseback riders completed a journey from Cheyenne River Reservation in Bridger, South Dakota to Wounded Knee Creek on the Pine Ridge Reservation. The 191 mile journey was a commemoration of the ride of Chief Big Foot and the Minneconjou Lakota in 1890, a ride that culminated in a massacre of most of the riders by the U.S. 7th Calvary. The commemorative ride was designed to teach the next generation about their history, to reflect upon what happened and to mend the hoop.

Producer Neenah Ellis grew up listening to stories and songs about Croatia told by her grandparents and her father. The family came to the U.S. from the island of Šolta, and Ellis's childhood was full of romantic tales about the "Old Country" and the beauty of the island that her relatives missed so much. Her grandfather had been sent to the United States after World War I, to find work that could help support his family back home. Story
By looking at disease from the perspective of a microorganism, scientists have found that the main goal of any virus or other type of bug is to reproduce. Illness is just a side effect of the microorganism's efforts to multiply as much as it possibly can. Whether a virus is carried by water, air, or by other creatures, the way it spreads is a numbers game; the more hosts that are infected, the more it can reproduce, and the more it reproduces, the stronger it can become.

The 1960s saw the Brazilian Amazon rainforest go from wretched jungle to the future of the country. Government policy encouraged widespread de-forestation, gold mining using industrial methods. The government proposed the first hydro-electrical plant based at the Tucurui Dam in the North Eastern State of Pará, Brazil. Story
In a frank series of interviews, Soviet women, from Russia, Ukraine and Georgia talk to producers Julie Drizen and Jude Thilman about managing their birth control. It was October of 1990, a time when the government policy of openness, glasnost, was fraying. The time when abortion was the primary form of birth control was coming to an end, but contraceptives were not readily available. Women used tampons, lemons, or tried to convince their partners to use condoms.

“You like it darker? Fine, so do I,” writes Stephen King in the afterword to this magnificent new collection of twelve stories that delve into the darker part of life—both metaphorical and literal. King has, for half a century, been a master of the form, and these stories, about fate, mortality, luck, and the folds in reality where anything can happen, are as rich and riveting as his novels, both weighty in theme and a huge pleasure to digest.

In the supernatural realms, there are creatures who belong to winter. I am not one of them. But like the coyote I can become at will, I am adaptable. My name is Mercy Thompson Hauptman, and my mate, Adam, is the werewolf who leads the Columbia Basin Pack, the pack charged with keeping the people who live and work in the Tri-Cities of Washington State safe. It’s a hard job, and it doesn’t leave much room for side quests. Which is why when I needed to travel to Montana to help my brother, I intended to go by myself.

Anthony Fauci is arguably the most famous – and most revered – doctor in the world today. His role guiding America sanely and calmly through Covid (and through the torrents of Trump) earned him the trust of millions during one of the most terrifying periods in modern American history, but this was only the most recent of the global epidemics in which Dr. Fauci played a major role. His crucial role in researching HIV and bringing AIDS into sympathetic public view and his leadership in navigating the Ebola, SARS, West Nile, and anthrax crises, make him truly an American hero.

There has been much debate over how we got here, and what to do next, and bestselling author and social psychologist Jonathan Haidt is at the white-hot center of that discourse. Haidt has spent his career speaking wisdom and truth into the most difficult landscapes—communities polarized by politics and religion, campuses battling culture wars, and now the perfect storm contributing to a public health emergency for Gen Z.
