Story
Long before Santa, Bing Crosby and the Mattel Toy Company stole the occasion, even before Christianity itself kidnapped it, the Winter Solstice was celebrated with seasonal ritual. One ancient solstice custom is mummering. Still practiced annually in parts of England and Ireland, this great-grand-daddy of Halloween masquerade died out in much of Canada and the United States centuries ago. In North America today, it is a popular part of Christmas now only in Newfoundland and Pennsylvania.

Story
Today the airwaves buzz with voices from cell phones, radio, television, and more. Yet, over one hundred years ago the air was strangely empty. Then on Signal Hill in Newfoundland, a young Italian inventor threw a kite antenna into the air and changed the world forever. The man was Guglielmo Marconi and his reception of the first trans-Atlantic wireless signal on December 12, 1901 has made possible almost every communication device we use today.

Story
When Guglielmo Marconi installed a receiving station at St. Johns Newfoundland in November 1901 he probably never realized the full impact of his invention. From that amazing feat that pulled sound across the horizon, radio is now as remarkable as wallpaper. The people of St. Johns are determined to celebrate this most ubiquitous of mediums on the 100th anniversary of the transmission of the first signal across the Atlantic.

Story
Our story begins within a video game. Producer Chris Brookes takes us on an adventure that explores what video games can tell us about teaching children in school.
A psychologist looks at students who play video games and whether they then learn new technologies faster in school. How can video games be structured towards improving knowledge of math, science and social studies? That is what some video game developers and educators are working on.

Story
The Salvadoran Civil War was a conflict between the military-led government of El Salvador and the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN), a coalition of five left-wing guerrilla groups. Lasting 13 years from 1979-1992, the war saw extreme violence from both sides and according to the United Nations over 75,000 people were killed during this time. Producer Chris Brookes takes us in and around the capital city of San Salvador, talking to both Salvadoran citizens and government officials about the conflict.

Story
In 1942, a US Navy destroyer was shipwrecked off Newfoundland. Of the few who survived, one man, Lanier Phillips, was black. The rescuers, never having seen a black man before, tried to scrub his skin clean and white. This is a story about growing up with fear in segregated Georgia, enlisting in a segregated navy, facing death in the icy North Atlantic, and a rescue which galvanized a man to fight racial discrimination.
