A thrilling pirate adventure for kids and adults

This was my first time experiencing both Eldritch Black and Scott Bennett and I thoroughly enjoyed them both. Dylan was a wonderful protagonist to follow and experience the story through. I enjoyed the pacing of the story, there was enough detail to feel involved and present without getting bogged down. And the timeline in the story was concise enough I didn't feel like large gaps were skipped for the sake of brevity. Basically the story line is light enough, and age appropriate enough, to appeal to a younger audience but engaging enough that adults will have fun with it too.

While I am interested in a book 2 and future adventures of the gang, I appreciated that book 1 was a self contained adventure.

Scott did a wonderful job with all the different voices, especially given the age ranges with the characters, and of course he had a perfect pirate accent! I would happily listen to books narrated by him again.

Good Story

Not typically a book I would read... but after reading The Book of Kindly Deaths I wanted to give it a try. I enjoyed going through the story with Dylan, Zachary, Emily, and Jacob. I got drawn into their story. Definitely will look into part 2.

Beware Of The Pirates of Penn Cove

This is a very good and exciting YA adventure novel. This story has everything a young or just young at heart reader could want. There is an interesting group of kids, dastardly villains, ghostly pirates with a spooky ship, and an octopus. What more could one want or need in a story. Oh, did I mention buried treasure and cryptic clues? It is all there in this rollicking tale.
The narrator was excellent.

Enjoyable Family Friendly Pirate Adventure

This book is geared towards kids, but I found the story enjoyable as an adult. At 5 hours, the story goes quick and was engaging enough for me to finish the book in one sitting. The author does a great job with the pacing, and the way the author implemented the ghost pirates was original. The narration in this book was fantastic. The narrator does an especially great job with the pirates, giving them all different accents and voices. Overall, this book is a great way to spend 5 hours on a family friendly pirate adventure.

Delightful story and great narrator

Loved the story. Can't wait to listen to book 2. This story is good for any age! I am a little older, well a lot older, than the recommended age 8-10 years old and found the story to be entertaining. It held our interest for the 5 hours.

I have listened to other books narrated by J Scott Bennett . He does a great job with the narration. Highly recommended.

Arrr there be pirates and curses in this here book

A great start to a series steeped in pirates, curses, magic, and mythical sea monsters. The world building leaned a little heavily on telling vs showing which isn't uncommon in first books and it took a while to get into the story's rhythm and groove. The back half of the novel really flies as the stakes rise and the end races towards us. J Scott Bennett's narration highlights the tension and adds to the danger and risks. I look forward to seeing how the friendships develop in the next book and I wonder if Dylan's brother will get in on the adventure or be cooped up home without a clue again. It has to be tough when you know something's up but can't quite bring yourself to ask. The Pirates of Penn Cove is a summer adventure you won't want to miss.

Story was a little weak

While I enjoyed the book, I think the story was an little weak. Even for a kids book it seemed to be lacking enough substance. Kids would probably love it, but I felt it was missing something.
