It's 1949. When war veteran Aloysius Archer is released from Carderock Prison, he is sent to Poca City on parole with a short list of dos and a much longer list of don'ts: do report regularly to his parole officer, don't go to bars, certainly don't drink alcohol, do get a job - and don't ever associate with loose women. The small town quickly proves more complicated and dangerous than Archer's years serving in the war or his time in jail.

When editor Susan Ryeland is given the manuscript of Alan Conway's latest novel, she has no reason to think it will be much different from any of his others. After working with the best-selling crime writer for years, she's intimately familiar with his detective, Atticus Pünd, who solves mysteries disturbing sleepy English villages. An homage to queens of classic British crime such as Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers, Alan's traditional formula has proved hugely successful.

Lots of fun with murder!
Steve Higgs has another winner! Laugh yourself silly while glued to the story and the suspense. Incredibly funny dialog with characters who truly are. Plot revolves around Mrs Fisher, a fiftysomething ordinary lady with a not unheard of problem. But her response to that problem is to book an around the world cruise in the finest suite on the grandest cruise ship. She even gets her very own butler! But the next morning it's all gone horribly wrong and she is accused of murder and has to solve it against all odds. Great fun!
Stevie Zimmerman is fantastic as the narrator who manages the equivalent of a straight face!

Gaining new confidence
There wasn’t much about Patricia Fisher to like or notice at the start of the book. She starts to shine upon acquaintance. Patricia was determined to figure things out after strange circumstances find her accused of murder by the cruise ship’s second in command. I like the Patricia Fisher that emerges at the end of this book.
The narrator does a good job.

Fantastic introduction to the series!
I'd been reading the books out of order but they are still wonderful as a stand alone read. But this one starts off the Patricia Fisher books and explains how our wonderful sleuth became a sleuth. Her bravery and quirks are very endearing, as aren't we all a bit hesitant to jump into the deep end of the pool for the very first time taking a swim? Loved every minute of it!
The narrator holds the listener enthralled as she moves unerringly through each character, carrying you along for the ride so you never wonder who is actually speaking in the storyline. Well done!
