Publisher's summary

Charlotte Holmes, Lady Sherlock, returns in the Victorian-set mystery series from the USA Today best-selling author of A Conspiracy in Belgravia and A Study in Scarlet Women, an NPR Best Book of 2016.

Under the cover of "Sherlock Holmes, consulting detective", Charlotte Holmes puts her extraordinary powers of deduction to good use. Aided by the capable Mrs. Watson, Charlotte draws those in need to her and makes it her business to know what other people don't.

When the estranged wife of her dear friend Lord Ingram is discovered dead on his estate, all signs point to him as the murderer. With Scotland Yard closing in, Charlotte goes under disguise to find out the truth.

Superb story

Love this twist on traditional Sherlock Holmes. I have enjoyed the previous books in the series and this one does not dissapoint. No idea how the books read, since i have only heard them on Audible. The narrator is fantastic.

Oh wow! My favourite of the series!!

*Spoiler-free review!*

I enjoy the overarching concept of this series. I appreciate that the characters are complicated, not 2D. I am VERY interested in the various relationships. This 3rd book ups the quality of all the metrics. Then does an excellent job on the mystery.

Did I not figure it out because I was so intrigued by the characters? Possibly. Usually I manage to do both. I was unprepared for the reveals. Terrific story-telling; wonderful character-building; incredible progress in relationships.

Ms. Reading does her usual spot-on narration. You can easily distinguish the various characters and understand all the words. As a hearing-impaired person (who seems quite fond of hyphens today!) this makes all the difference.

Already waiting for the 4th installment!

Excellent storytelling and a new twist on Sherlock Holmes. Excellent read for those who believe Sherlock could just possibly be a woman!

Wow! Best in Series So Far

Thoroughly enjoyed this book; really good. Charlotte is something else & very naughty; it was noteworthy when she lost her appetite indicating her awareness of & concern about situation. Glad to see friendly inspector snap out of his judgmental & stupid attitude, also the sister showing some spunk. Narration was good. Awaiting next release.

Binge Worthy

Loved this story from beginning to end. Thomas paints a fascinating portrait of historical England, putting emphasis on the struggles women faced in a male dominated society. It makes me appreciate my own life as a woman and the choices I often take for granted. Beautifully written. Not my favorite from this series (#2 is my fav) but still a knock out. Still waiting on Moriarty to make an appearance!

Great Book!

I really love these books with Charlotte Holmes. And this particular book is one of the best in the series. The story line is great.

But …
The one major thing that drives me crazy about these stories is they have when the Season is supposed to be backwards. The London Season is in the cold season, from mid autumn after harvest and fall hunting season, until early spring at the start of planting and spring hunting. Three major things leads to the Season being in the winter: one, most nobility are land owners, while they don’t farm they usually have tenants that do and need looking after which requires the land owner to be in the country; two, the country and the nobility’s estates look their best during the spring and summer so they spend time in the country to enjoy their estates; and three, during that time period (19th century) and earlier before modern plumbing and water treatment, London stank during the heat of summer so if one is rich enough to have a place to live in outside of London during the summer they left Town.
