Publisher's summary

Charity Blake survived a nightmare. Now she is the monster others dream about.

By day, punk-rock runaway Charity Blake struggles through a stream of dead-end jobs and the haunting memories of her past. But at night she is the Harpy, sprouting wings with black feathers, and claws made for tearing the flesh of her prey.

Having survived a lifetime of abuse and torment from a sadistic man who broke her spirit, Charity's physical manifestation of her grief and anger allows her to hunt down those like her abuser. Only this time, Charity isn't a helpless little girl praying for things to end. Now she is the monster, and hell hath no fury like a harpy scorned.

Power always comes at a price though, and Charity's inner predator craves to take over. Torn between a life with no feeling other than the sweet satisfaction at ripping evil apart or suffering through her days to stay with the two people she cares for most, Charity must choose between her human existence or the wild and feral freedom of a flying avenger.

A perfect listen for fans of Joe Hill, Anne Rice, and Chuck Palahniuk, The Harpy is the first book in the chilling and deeply disturbing world of the Harpyverse where victims become vigilantes and power is a thing to be played with.

Masterful narration

Extremely dark, difficult material with a well crafted story. But it's Helen Laser's fantastic narration that really makes this. Her performance is perfectly nuanced, natural and completely draws you in.

protagonist is a little too flawed

don't get me wrong, this is a dark story and our protagonist charity has a even darker background but there is a point where the rebellious attitude makes her a little hard to follow. getting into some small spoilers here, lady's it's never a good idea to sleep with your friends boyfriend behind there back especially if you yourself just started a relationship with your neighbor (he deserved better) and then for some reason we are supposed to care about this Evan guy even know he's done some terrible things himself which makes our protagonist kinda a hypocrite. but a major part of this story is about trying to hold onto your humanity along with all its flaws so I can't really be to hard on it for that, 3 stars but it could have easily had 5

Dark, fresh and bloody.

I had no idea what to expect, but it wasn't what I received, and I'm not complaining. The main character carries around some demons, and then some. She is also witty and smart. This story deals with some really dark themes, some of them very real. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to Book 2. It was a good mix of reality, horror, and blood with the right amount of feelings.
