Publisher's summary

Charlie Donlea, one of the most original new voices in suspense, returns with a haunting novel, laden with twists and high tension, about two abducted girls - one who returns, one who doesn't - and the forensics expert searching for answers.

Nicole Cutty and Megan McDonald are both high school seniors in the small town of Emerson Bay, North Carolina. When they disappear from a beach party one warm summer night, police launch a massive search. No clues are found, and hope is almost lost until Megan miraculously surfaces after escaping from a bunker deep in the woods. A year later the best-selling account of her ordeal has turned Megan from local hero to national celebrity. It's a triumphant, inspiring story except for one inconvenient detail: Nicole is still missing.

Nicole's older sister, Livia, a fellow in forensic pathology, expects that one day soon Nicole's body will be found, and it will be up to someone like Livia to analyze the evidence and finally determine her sister's fate. Instead the first clue to Nicole's disappearance comes from another body that shows up in Livia's morgue - that of a young man connected to Nicole's past. Livia reaches out to Megan for help, hoping to learn more about the night the two were taken. Other girls have gone missing, too, and Livia is increasingly certain the cases are connected. But Megan knows more than she revealed in her blockbuster book. Flashes of memory are coming together, pointing to something darker and more monstrous than her chilling memoir describes. And the deeper she and Livia dig, the more they realize that sometimes true terror lies in finding exactly what you've been looking for.

Very good thriller about abducted girls

This was a good, on the edge of your seat thriller with a neat little twist at the end. This story, about young abducted girls, kept my interest until the end. I read the audio version of this one. The narrator was really good. Her voice was just a little too high for my taste, but she did a good job nonetheless. it was read by Nina Alvamar.

Terror and Lies!!

This was an amazing book. Great plot, and kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time.
I could not put this book down. I was constantly putting my headphones in to listen.
It has good, quick pacing. I could not figure out the twist, or which direction the story was heading. Every time I thought I knew what would happen, or what was going on... I was wrong.
This is one of my favorite new reads!
The narrator was amazing. So easy to listen to, and follow along.
Nothing is worse than a narrator taking away from a good story. Nina adds to it.

A mix of good and bad

The CSI forensics parts were interesting.

The Criminal Minds depravity of the Capture Club was just disturbing.

I figured out who the bad-guy-kidnapper was pretty early on so there was not much suspense, and the end was unsatisfying, but overall it was entertaining enough to keep going.

in hindsight I should have passed

contrived and predictable. too much purple prose. does an internet "capture group" really exist -- don't you think Meghan's mother would have had doubts about hubby?

This book was good and not so good

Pretty decent book- but the narrators voice drove me crazy when she was narrating the male voices. Also- it was a bit slow in spots- but the ending is what really got me. DO NOT read if you like happy endings!!

Disgusted

After all that time it does not tell if she lived or died! I do not have time to waste on writings like this. I like closure!

Good Story Bad Ending

The book was good, well thought out, interesting science, good plot. The ending was so poor, not realistic, no possible, not likely. It is really too bad. there were so many more ways this could have been and yet the worst was chosen.

COMPLICATED STORY

I was intrigued when reading the book details. I’m from North Carolina and enjoy being able to know the locations mentioned in a storyline. The NC coastline seems to be somewhat popular recently with authors. In my minds eye I could imagine the beach areas and the familiar activities. While I did enjoy the story itself I had begun to figure out the person who abducted the females before the last few chapters. I did like the mix of characters. One real surprise nugget in the story was not only being from NC but at one time I had lived in Carroll County, Virginia. Somewhat strange I guess. I’m sorry to say I am very disappointed with the ending. Maybe a second book to answer the question we are left with.
