Publisher's summary

From the author of the phenomenal best seller The Coaching Habit comes a book of advice...on how to give less advice. Ah, the irony.

The Coaching Habit was an unexpected best seller: over 750 thousand copies sold so far, a Wall Street Journal best seller, and used by people and organizations around the world. If The Coaching Habit says, “Here are the seven essential questions to be more coach-like”, The Advice Trap is about getting to grips with how to actually change your behavior, so you stay curious a little bit longer.

It sounds like it should be easy, but it’s not. To get there, leading coach and trainer Michael Bungay Stanier offers specific coaching strategies, particularly on how to focus on what matters most. The audiobook of The Advice Trap gives you tools to make your conversations, coaching, and otherwise, irresistible.

If you’ve already heard The Advice Trap, thank you, and there’s a ton of added value content for you in the audiobook, too. Michael’s invited other voices to respond to what was most useful for them in each of the chapters, so there are different perspectives and less of a monologue of advice.

You’ll hear from:

  • Pau Gasol, NBA All-Star
  • Dr. Alex Osterwalder, leading management thinker
  • Dr. Kofi Hope, co-founder of Monumental
  • Feyzi Fatehi, CEO of Corent Technology
  • Leanne Hughes, host of the First Time Facilitator podcast
  • Dr. Shannon Minifie, CEO of Box of Crayons
  • Sandy McIntosh, EVP and CHRO of TELUS
  • Tyson Yunkaporta, author of the acclaimed book Sand Talk

In 2019, Michael Bungay Stanier was named the number-one thought leader in coaching, and was short-listed for the coaching award by Thinkers50, the “Oscars of Management”. His works been featured in journals such as HBR, Fast Company, Forbes, and Inc., and his company, Box of Crayons, has trained more than 100,000 people, regular managers, leaders, and individual contributors in the tools and mindset required for this essential leadership behavior: staying curious and being more coach-like. You’ll get all of that wisdom and experience when you listen to The Advice Trap. (And, by the way, thank you in advance for buying it and listening.)

Great content

Really important tips and tactics, but ruined a bit by author with speech issues. I get the idea but it makes is so much harder to focus and learn. I am not a native speaker btw

Great book , very helpful

This is the deep dive version of the coaching habit. I was hesitant at first to buy it because I thought it would just be redundant but it ended up being very worth while. Even though there are some similar mentions in this book and the coaching habit, this book goes much deeper. I even ordered the actual book to use as a reference because I liked it so much.

So useful

This book in addition to the coaching habit has had a profound affect on my professional life and I highly recommend it. It is simple to understand and yet I can practice for the rest of my life.

Great book, however

Very insightful read and I love that it provides meaningful tools for immediate application.
I was very disappointed with the “end of chapter review” on the topic of Hope. The speaker interjected politics which was completely unnecessary and borderline unprofessional. How do you tell someone not to have hope? A cancer patient? A dying father/mother? A child going to kindergarten after a school shooting?

Immediately became a favorite

this book was great, not only from the content POV - this, as well as the author's other book, The Coaching Habit are jam packed with those sheepish 'yup, that's me' moments- but also a really great audiobook experience. as someone who always groans when an author self- narrates (another laughing moment when he called me out on that up front), this one broke the mold. full of audiobook only content, and hilarious additions the eukalali cracked me up every time) it was really well done and enjoyable. I'll definitely be listening again and recommending to others.

this is a keeper!

I love this book and I will listen to it again soon. the author does a fantastic job of narrating.

this book makes the most of the audio format by bringing in other people for discussion about key points in the book. this technique, along with other formatting features, makes it easy absorb the valuable concepts that are presented.

the information in the book is invaluable and inspiring. certainly one of my favorite audible purchases.

Its not all about not giving Advice

Michael has published a complimentary piece, with this book, to his already well acclaimed book The Coaching Habit. This book however only briefly reflects on the previous publicatipn and so 99% of this book is new and thought provoking.

An Excellent book and a must read for all new and old coaches and leaders!

Taming the advice monster

This book is absolutely fantastic. It helps to gain insight into why one is inclined to give advice rather than listening to the real issue and what to do about it. In my case it is more often than not a time issue. I need a fast result but it never tends to lead to the real solution. This book helps me to look at the benefits of giving advice and compare this to the costs. I have encountered all advice persona in various coaching sessions and am now able to recognise them. I stay curious longer and am able to help my coachee to put actions in place for the real issues. I have asked a previous difficult to coach person, what's on your mind? And followed it with What else in various forms... Guess what? We actually got a lot closer to the real issue than we ever did. Thanks for this amazing tool.

Excellent concise lessons

I found this book the be a really nice follow-on from The Coaching Habit. It contains concise and to-the/point lessons\advice on coaching which continues on from The Coaching Habit, but also can stand alone.
It focuses on some of the key “traps” and simple techniques that make a big difference.
