Publisher's Summary
The definitive edition - updated and expanded, with access to an online toolkit.
Co-Active Coaching offers current and aspiring coaches, leaders and managers in organisations and anyone wanting to strengthen interpersonal relationships a practical yet transformative communication process called the Co-Active Model. Since its creation by the authors more than 25 years ago, the Co-Active Model and the book have formed the foundation of the authors' six-part coach training program delivered globally to tens of thousands of individuals each year through the authors' training institute, CTI.
With its origins in the coaching profession, the Co-Active Model also applies to work and interpersonal relationships because it is based on principles of effective communication backed by current scientific research. In this highly-anticipated new edition, the universal applicability of the the Co-Active Model is emphasised. It goes beyond the one-on-one coach/coachee structure to include guidance for leaders and managers on how they can add a coaching competency to their professional skill set.
New to this edition:
- Every chapter has been updated for relevance and direct application to coaching in all of its forms, including in the workplace
- New material covering: current neuroscience research, Co-Active approaches to leadership development and working with groups and teams

Bit trite and dull
Some good theory here but literally just hours of homage to how great coaching is with little really grit and substance, a beginners book, nothing wrong with that of course - if you want a fluffy, sickly take on what coaching is go for it - better coaching material out there that gets to the point. I’m a UK reader and this appears US Centric

Coaches guide to higher coaching
As a novice coach this book builds on what I have learnt in terms of coaching theory such as the GROW model. In fact the guidance offered in this book builds on the basics so naturally that it is easy to follow and apply despite my inexperience.
The authors seamlessly weave their framework with stories, examples and perspectives throughtout making this an enjoyable experience. There is an underpinning aim to the authors framework and that is, as a coach, to reach a level of relationship with your coachee that moves beyond basic guidance and into the realms of unbias friendship. As such, the authors provide effective and simple tools in which to develop oneself through practice to the benefit of both the coachee and yourself.
Overall, this book is a must for any coach wishing to develop their practice into something more meaningful and effective.

Long winded, hard to follow
The content structure seems to be like a continuous essay with mostly opinions and principles with very little to no mention of factual references or studies. The audio book has no useful descriptions for chapter titles which makes it even more difficult to follow. Five chapters in and it still felt like an intro on coaching and co-active coaching with little new, useful and practical bits to take away. I've read several coaching books and you want to improve your skills in coaching, look elsewhere. If you really want to learn about co-active coaching, buy the physical book instead.

As leaders, how we are is as important as what we do. This new edition of a leadership classic shows how to master the inner and outer work needed to build relationships that unleash the transformational creative potential in everyone. Top-down, one-dimensional leadership models are hopelessly outmoded in today’s rapidly changing world. And they waste the leadership ability present throughout an organization, not just at the top.

Story
“Coaches rely far too much on asking open-ended questions,” says Marcia Reynolds. But questions only seek answers — inquiry provides insight. When, instead of just questions, clients hear their thoughts, opinions, and beliefs spoken by someone else, it prompts them to critically consider how their thinking affects their goals. Reynolds cites the latest brain science to show why reflective inquiry works and provides techniques, tips, and structures for creating breakthrough conversations.
