Editorial Reviews

Editors Select, November 2016 - I was on maternity leave over the summer when I received an early copy of The Sun Is Also a Star. Thankfully my mom was around that day to watch the baby, because I couldn’t put it down. Not only is Nicola Yoon answering the call for more diversity in YA literature, she is also creating compelling, honest, and memorable characters in her fiction. The Sun Is Also a Star, which is a finalist for the National Book Award, is told from the alternating perspectives of two teenagers - one a Korean American boy who is on the "doctor tract" despite his proclivity for poetry; the other a Jamaican girl who is desperately trying to save her family from their imminent deportation. Over a single day, we watch how fate weaves its way into their lives. I recently got to listen to the audiobook, narrated by Bahni Turpin, Raymond Lee, and Dominic Hoffman - whose performances ensure Yoon’s work will soon become essential listening. —Katie, Audible Editor

Publisher's Summary

Natasha

I'm a girl who believes in science and facts. Not fate. Not destiny. Or dreams that will never come true. I'm definitely not the kind of girl who meets a cute boy on a crowded New York City street and falls in love with him. Not when my family is 12 hours away from being deported to Jamaica. Falling in love with him won't be my story.

Daniel

I've always been the good son, the good student, living up to my parents' high expectations. Never the poet. Or the dreamer. But when I see her, I forget about all that. Something about Natasha makes me think that fate has something much more extraordinary in store - for both of us.

The Universe

Every moment in our lives has brought us to this single moment. A million futures lie before us. Which one will come true?

Beautifully written love story

This was perhaps the BEST book I have read/listened to in a long while!! I loved everything about this story and fell in love with the characters as well. I have recommended this book to all of my friends. BTW, I'm a 43 year old, mother of two who is a hopeless romantic!!

This was cute but flawed

I am solely reviewing the narration here. It was nice to have multiple readers since there was more than one main character plus one was a boy and one a girl. The problems I have with the narration are 1) The narration was way too slow. I had to speed it up and it still felt slow. 2)The woman narrating 17 year old Natasha sounds like she is 40. It's fine to be 40, I'm in my 30's but it's strange to hear such an adult voice narrating a 17 year old. 3) Some of the accents were done very poorly. I know I sound like a harsh critic, but I think that the audio industry is so large now that it is possible to find the perfect narrator for each story. These guys and gal just weren't the right fit.

My Favorite YA Book of the Year

Over a single day we watch how fate weaves its way into their relationship and their futures – together and apart. I recently got to listen to the audiobook, which was beautifully performed by Bahni Turpin, Raymond Lee, and Dominic Hoffman. Turpin and Lee inhabit the main characters in such a way that ensures Yoon’s work will become essential listening.

Absolutely incredible

If you want an emotional book that will make you cry laugh and doubt everything than this is the one for you. The performance was lovely and I haven’t enjoyed listening to anything as much as this

Sweet Little Book

This is a sweet little book of a Jamaican girl about to be deported who by happenstance meets a Korean-American boy, conflicted about his path in life. Both fall in love in the span of a few hours. Her writing style is solid, but this one is okay in comparison to "Everything, Everything". The story is implausible and the female narrator was annoying. Overall, a cute story, but not as great as it was hyped to be. Still worth the credit.

Surprisingly bittersweet, well crafted

I was initially apprehensive with this book as I assumed it was for young adults, however I was surprised to find how well written and intricately constructed it was.

The narrative shifts between a young undocumented woman, originally from Jamaica but brought up in the U.S., and an American-born Korean, who find each other on her last day before she is deported. In between are segways of an unknown voice who delves into the different characters and their backgrounds. The book explores fate and free will and whether there is an overarching hand that shapes this.

Their romance resembles that of 'Before Sunset', which was enjoyable but obviously the dialogue in this novel is not as intelligent. It's bittersweet, coming-of-age, and takes you back to young love.

Simply Cosmic

This is my first Nicola Yoon book. I was lured into the story by the differing backgrounds of the Natasha and Daniel. I was moved by the backstory of every character that crossed their paths and the essential fortitude that binds the story.

Such a well written book that brings hope in the twist of sadness. This book is simply cosmic.

From the voices of the readers to the intensity of the plot, I find no faults at all and have recommended it to so many of my friends. Just as good as Everything Everything, one of the best authors I've come across. Congrats Nicola👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

exceptional and inspiring

Exceptional and inspiring in every way. Beautifully written. Characters one actually cares about even ones you would think insignificant. So sad when it ended which I don't experience very often. We need more from your positive thinking Nicolai Yoon.
