Publisher's summary

Enter the dark, magical world of the House of Night series by bestselling authors P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast, a world very much like our own, except here vampyres have always existed.

One minute, sixteen-year-old Zoey Redbird is a normal teenager dealing with everyday high school stress: her cute boyfriend Heath, the school's star quarterback who suddenly seems more interested in partying than playing ball; her nosy frenemy Kayla, who's way too concerned with how things are going with Heath; her uber-tough geometry test tomorrow.

The next, she's Marked as a fledgling vampyre, forcing her to leave her ordinary life behind and join the House of Night, a boarding school where she will train to become an adult vampyre. That is, if she makes it through the Change—and not all of those who are Marked do.

It sucks to begin a new life, especially away from her friends, and on top of that, Zoey is no average fledgling. She has been chosen as special by the vampyre Goddess, Nyx. Zoey discovers she has amazing powers, but along with her powers come bloodlust and an unfortunate ability to Imprint with Heath, who just doesn't know how to take "no" for an answer. To add to her stress, she is not the only fledgling at the House of Night with special powers: when she discovers that the leader of the Dark Daughters, the school's most elite group, is misusing her Goddess-given gifts, Zoey must look deep within herself for the courage to embrace her destiny—with a little help from her new vampyre friends.

Good content..horrible narration

The story is good. The narrator is horrible. Her intonation and pronunciation is like drawing fingernails across a chalkboard to me. She sounds like she's asking a question right in the middle of each sentence. Horrible. I'd like to listen to others in the series but don't think I can take any more of her.

Did not hold up well

The narrator did a decent job portraying the main character- unfortunately, that girl is incredibly annoying. Slut shaming sure felt popular back in 2007, but it is now disguising and just hard to listen to.

A Fun Take on Vampirism

Every time I think I'm tired of YA vampires, I end up reading a new vampire story that I enjoy, so clearly, this category of paranormal fiction contains a lot of room for variety.

I enjoyed this world and the unique fashion in which the vampirism works. There's also enough about the world that I still don't understand that makes me want to read onward. This is definitely a boarding school vampire book, though the characters are quite different from say, Vampire Academy (which is amazing and a must read series).

The love interesting is adorable but pretty boring. He's a bit like a dog that follows you around and appears for attention at all the right moments. The difference is that dogs have a lot of personality, and beyond being cute, this guy really doesn't have much going for him.

I'm okay with that, because the story really isn't about him, and he plays only a minor role. The story is a lot more about Zoey and her interesting new friendships and how they push back against the villain of the story, whom I suspect is not the true villain of the series.

I like the goddess influence, as well as the American Indian themes that waft throughout this story. That was a good change of pace. I think I'll definitely give the second book a try to see how this series moves forward. I'm not desperately racing out to get my hands on the next book, but I suspect I'll enjoy it when I finally read it.

Anyway, long story short, in the realm of YA vampire stories, this definitely isn't a must read, but it's absolutely a good supplemental read for someone who really gets a kick out of the unique mythology behind each different fictional vampire world.

My favorite series

As a teen i adored this series and it seems now i still do. I wanted to reread it so bad and was really happy to see it was an audio book now as well. It was just like falling in love with the world all over again!

cool story - low class understanding of sexuality

To start with the story is excellent and compelling, even written and performed to be from a modern teen average maturity level. The main character demonstrates a certain amount of humility and wisdom that fits her character, but the biggest failing that the average person may be forced to face is the hugely dysfunctional-teen immaturity on the subject of sexuality. Both language and issues herein seem to be intentionally low class and underdeveloped as if the reader is expected to have no experience with sexuality and virtually no standards. If all sexuality were removed, normally a story would suffer a loss, but here it would be an enhancement. One star for story! I wish I could rate this story higher for the sake of everything else that was done well.

Monotone

I love The House of Night books but this narrator is absolutely horrible! I'm tempted to stop the audible House of Night Series because I just can't deal with her different character voices and their monotone way. This narrator is quickly ruining this series for me.

Racist and homophobic

Non stop cultural appropriation, homophobia, and racism. Not to mention the slut shaming. It’s too bad because it could of been a really interesting take on vampires. It just gets overshadowed by how problematic the characters/writers are.

The reader is also cringe.

New Twist of Vampire

So i am a fan of the old school type of vampire that burns in the sun and doesnt have all kinds of special owers and stuff.... However,Cast wrote this book with pure genious. This makes a whole new way to experience the life of vampires. it involves many pieces for their world and how they are. It does have a total teen age drama appeal to it but it just makes this story all the better
