Publisher's summary

What are you waiting for? NA paranormal fantasy at its best by international best-selling author Tara Brown.

Someone is drugging the fairest of them all and hurting them in the dark corners of the forests around Port Mackenzie - shrouding the town in mystery and darkness. But nothing is as it seems. In the dark corners of the small town, there is also a light, a cure to what ails the sick. But everything comes at a cost, a price that must be paid. Aimee James discovers that cost the moment she dies. She discovers there are worse things than dying. She finds herself cursed. Discover how the Devil's Roses all starts because in the end it is the beginning that chooses who we will become and what side we will take.

Note from the author - This is the newly edited version. It won't ever be perfect because this is where I started; this was my first book. I don't even recognize the style of writing anymore, I have changed so much. So it is nice for me to be able to look at this and see where I started, how much I have grown as an author. We have gotten it as close to perfect as we can without ruining the experience of a debut novel by me, Tara Brown. Hope you enjoy, and thank you so much for listening to my beginning.

can't even finish it

I only have an 1 hr 25 min left and I don't want to finish it because of the main character got soooooo annoying. 1. I'm not a fan of sister rivalry ( I can understand a little childish rivalry). I just don't support talking down about sisters/females. For example, she called her sister (slut, satan, stupid, and let other people talk bad about her sister and agreeing). 2. I don't like the main character arrogance and how she thinks she is smarter than the average teenager. I actually thought she was quite stupid and didn't have any common sense. Maybe it was because she was young but I'm tired of the teenager romance supernatural novels where the main character has no sense. Every main character is worried about is losing their virginity/getting a boyfriend vs. not worrying about the demons trying to kill you and your family but congratulations on losing your virginity soooo cool B-).

No. Just.... no.

This was a really terrible book. The characters are vapid. The narrator’s accent is indescribably bad. I made it four hours in and couldn’t listen further. I’m leaving this review so that someone else doesn’t make the same mistake that I did.

Judgy and kind of selfish

The main character is super hard to swallow because of her snooty judgmental way of thinking of anyone who isn’t like her...can’t even get through he book.

fun listen

The narrator was great! I always appreciate when characters are well defined. The story was hard to get into in the beginning. I know some people had trouble getting past the main character's personality. She is a lot to take on, and the relationship with her twin sister is so complicated and annoying. but I guess the story wouldn't have been the same without that rivalry. I really liked the end though. I have mixed feelings about the love story. It's just a sad one, but beautiful. The protagonist grows throughout the book, so even though some people might feel annoyed or don't want to continue listening, I say give it a try. it won't disappoint.

Great.

Based on the author’s note, I feel like she I apologizing for her first book not being “good enough.” However, I’m not really sure what her grievance is with it. I thought the book was great, well written, and had an interesting story.

I wanted to like this

but I didnt. I pushed through about 2/3 of the book hoping the writing would get better, but it didnt. I have rarely quit before the end but in this case I couldn't force myself to listen anymore. The teen angst, immediate love, etc was just too much.

wow

really enthralling. wish the ending had more to do with the 2 love interests and not been so cliffhangish like there was going to be a sequel which I've started book 2 and it has a different protagonist so idk if the previous characters will be included or not. all together a great read. 😊

Remarkable

This is Book 1 in a series that is new to me. It isn’t often a book manages to inject something new into the paranormal or supernatural genre. Tara Brown has managed to capture my interest by keeping me guessing as to what exactly has happened to the main character Amy. Instead of reusing familiar tropes she has managed to find a unique niche and injected original content that I found intriguing. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.

Good listen!

Awkward pacing, but I really enjoyed the story itself and am excited to see where the rest of the series goes!

Cursed but this series is really a readers blessing

Tara Brown is a phenomenal author and The Devils Roses is a tremendous series. Julie McKay expresses the true soul of these books as her narration pulls the listener into the scenery of each chapter. Cursed is the first book in this series and you will not be disappointed and will eagerly download the series in book form and audiobooks too. A great read, well worth the money spent. A series on my annual holiday reread list💕

Too much like a Wattpad story

The story felt like it was taken straight from Wattpad. From the overuse of "I" to start sentences, to the not-like-other-girls main character and her constantly smirking love-interest...
It might've peaked my interest when I was 13, but sadly not anymore.

Brilliant series - get past the 1st book

I liked this a lot. The narrator was great and definitely made the story interesting.

I'm not on book 2 and it's so amazing. Really great storyline, loads of new characters with abilities. I'm so glad I continued with the series.

Very average

I can see why the author puts a disclaimer in the blurb. Writing is very amateur and some of the conversations between characters are so forced, it if as if the author has never heard teenagers interact before. The narration doesn't help, the inflection a mix between confusion and pained. Decent as background noise only.

Different

This was not my usual type of book, so I was not sure how to score it. I prefer murder mysteries

Waste of time

With all due respect to the altar the story could have been better it was such a waste of time listening to this and thinking it’s gonna get better it’s gonna get better but it never date the girl is a slut and she thinks bad of a sister how pathetic one time she said she is in love with Alexander then she say she is in love with Sean can’t believe it and this girl I assume never had love in her life which completely shows because she’s not able to understand her feelings properly she blames Alexander for everything in reality he was just trying to help her Shane loves her for all his life and she is using him as well the whole story is all about her which I can understand because there’s only one main character but there’s nothing happening there is no conclusion there is nothing to look forward so I am not listening to next door

Give it listening time.

This was an interesting story and listen, it felt like it setting the scene and experiencing the main characters daily life took an awful long time before the story started to before interesting. Much of this was because though I enjoyed experiencing the dynamic between the two sisters, I wasn't really keen on the boyfriends and it took a Long time to get to any hint of the supernatural.

I suggest giving this book a lot of time to get to that point as once the murders and poisoning occurs, the story becomes really interesting and particularly the end is exciting for me and i can't wait to get started on book 2 of the Devil's Roses series.

Definite Potential but needs an overhaul.

Was Aymie's mum just a random? No real explanation there.
And who let's their daughter slip in and out of consciousness for 5 days without calling an ambulance? Thought dad was supposed to be intelligent.
After doing what he does for over 600 years wouldn't Alex know that he masks sickness and was potentially killing Aymie.
How could Aymie not recognise her chemistry teacher that she saw every school day. Big deal if he was wearing a hoody and sunnies. How could a chemistry teacher get the doses sooo wrong?
What has Gabriel's dad being a sleeze got to do with anything?
Who are the roses?
what did Aymie end up telling her dad, sister and Shane or has she just disappeared for a year. That doesn't suit her character. What happened to Alex? He just disappeared chasing his dad around.
Aymie killed an innocent, when she knew the situation was bad, she still went ahead with absolutely no regard for the girl and then dumped her body at the bottom of the ocean so her family will never know what has happened to her....bad...She should have just died. what makes her life anymore important than that girls? She didn't even step in to help the girl on the train. She's the selfish, self conceited one.
This book should have been longer or even 2 books to explain things properly. it has the potential to be fantastic but needs some fixing.

An start to a new series

An interesting story from a first person pov.
I did find some of the scenes jumped quickly without explanation but I think this is purely because it was the first book and a lot to squeeze in.
