Great listen to get lost in the supernatural

This series was one of the best audible that I’ve listened to. The narrator did a fantastic job of all of the characters. Each one had their own voice and personality so it was easy to just turn your mind off and just go with it. The author kept the storyline interesting and moving so it never fell flat or dwelled too long during the series. This is all YA so no descriptive love scenes or cussing. It’s a nice change of pace from what I usually listen to. Highly recommend to listen. You will not be disappointed.

When 2 who are wronged set out to make a right...

The world of the vale where humans are the have nots and are subject to the vampires.. required to give blood in exchange for be allowed to live there... not like they have an option to leave.

Annika is a human kidnapped to the vale and not ok with the status quo.

Enter the powerful Vampire prince, angry at being turned against his will who just wants his life back and to destroy the queen who took it.

When these two meet.. nothing will stand in their way.. Except for themselves, they both must overcome so they can finally fight for their cause.

BAD!!

I don’t know if I hated the writing or the narration or BOTH! This series was written so poorly and the narrator was horrible (again not sure if it was her fault). She did have different voices and tried but, OH MY GOSH, the books were repetitive and soooo annoying. I hung through to the end because the storyline itself wasn’t too bad. I do not recommend this series.... maybe if you’re a teen.

Stole Aladdin

Highly disappointed with the plot of these books. She stole the old Aladdin story and made it about witches and vampires. There is even and “Genie”. I listened to a book and a half and can’t do it anymore.

only 1 star because it was the lowest. the story was juvenile but I was aware of that before I ordered it. BUT HOW MANY BLOOD OATHS can one story have?????
The voices drove me crazy. Like claws on cardboard. Couldn't finish it. Sorry, I tried.

Much better than her other works

This story is written so much better than some of her other works. Better story line and is pretty decent overall. The beginning books are very much like The Selection but with vampires, but still a good listen.

Hate the ending

The ending left to many questions. I can only hope it has a spin off.

Juvenile writing with unimpressive storyline

Overall, this story reads like an unfinished fan fiction off shoot written by an inexperienced tween lacking access to a thesaurus.

Plotline:
The storyline of this book starts off as some sort of “Aladdin” meets “Beauty and the Beast” combo story with vampires and witches in place of the Beast and Sorcerer/ Jafar. A witch learns that a human blood slave girl named Annika, (who a strong passion for books-ie- Belle) is the only one who can retrieve a magical artifact from a cave (ie- Aladdin). Annika falls for Jason, the vampire prince of the kingdom, thus blending the Beast and Jasmine. From this early happening in the book, the story drags on with obvious plot points, the only curve ball being Annika’s true heritage and the journey that she takes to learn more. Many characters and their side stories are thrown in by happenstance, not allowing the main focus to remain on the key characters and key plotline. The ending to this tale seemed rushed and was remarkably unclimactic and reads as unfinished. The final chapter having come from a new character perspective makes it that much more bizarre.

Writing style:
The story is written from multiple viewpoints, where each chapter is headed by the character’s name who is to spearhead that chapter. While this has worked in various other books, Madow throws in unnecessary character view points that in no way enhance the overall plot line. In addition, Madow continually used the same phrases over and over, causing the story to drag on and sound monotonous. Her over use of mystical techniques, such as the blood oath, are over used and sadly explained nearly each time. Once a story element is established, it does not need to be explained again- particularly not in the same tiresome way. Lastly in regards to writing style, Madow has written this like a high school fan girl who read “Twilight” for the first time and took to Wattpad to jot down their story. There is no creativity in word choices. This particularly shows in the lack of inventive descriptions of the characters and their surroundings, using hardly any adjectives or adverbs. Along with this rookie writing move would be the obvious lack of a thesaurus in Madow’s possession. The amount of repetitive words and identical phrases used in this series is mind boggling.

Performance:
The only redeeming quality to this story was the performance done by Patricia Santomasso. Santomasso worked well with what she was given. She uses a slight change of voice for all female characters, and does her best to alter her masculine sounding tones for each male character. Due to the many. Haracter viewpoints, Santomasso was not able to provide distinct voices for each character (particularly those that we only heard from once or twice), but she vocalized her characters in a way that helped diminish any confusion created within the storyline.

Overall, not worth the money or the read. If I hadn’t paid for this deceptively described book, I would never have finished listening.

repeats way too much

The first book was good but the sequel books recap what happened in the first book, way too much. I felt like I was listening to a soap opera and you could fall asleep and wake up an hour later and know what was going on.
