Publisher's summary

Orange Is the New Black meets Walter Dean Myer's Monster in this gritty, twisty, and haunting debut by Tiffany D. Jackson about a girl convicted of murder seeking the truth while surviving life in a group home.

Mary B. Addison killed a baby.

Allegedly. She didn't say much in that first interview with detectives, and the media filled in the only blanks that mattered: a white baby had died while under the care of a churchgoing black woman and her nine-year-old daughter. The public convicted Mary, and the jury made it official. But did she do it?

There wasn't a point to setting the record straight before, but now she's got Ted - and their unborn child - to think about. When the state threatens to take her baby, Mary's fate now lies in the hands of the one person she distrusts the most: her momma. No one knows the real Momma. But does anyone know the real Mary?

Critic reviews

"Bahni Turpin’s stunning narration of this audiobook at some points seems like a multivoiced performance.... Turpin excels at giving dimension to even minor characters - bullying housemates, pretentious and cruel housemothers, and the lawyer who is determined to get Mary justice.... From the gripping beginning to the unsettling ending, Turpin maintains the intensity of this compelling story." (AudioFile)

Bahni Turpin's Performance is BRILLIANT

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I have never actually submitted a review. I am a prolific audiobook listener and usually just mark my "stars" at the conclusion of a book. But, I had to share my thoughts on this book. This book is difficult to describe. It's part coming of age, part an examination at our criminal justice system as it applies to youths, and part mystery all woven together into something that was hard to stop listening to. Mary, the main character, is vulnerable but strong, immature yet wise beyond her years, and relatable but surprising. And the book had a twist that you could not see coming.

Have you listened to any of Bahni Turpin’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Bahni Turpin is one of my favorite narrators. She can bring a character to life in a way that makes you truly love (or hate!) that character. I also listened to her narration of "The Underground Railroad", which was just as outstanding.

Amazing!

This book was addictive. So well written and perfect title. You will literally find yourself Googling these characters to follow the work way after you finish. The author captured so many genres ( suspense, horror, comedy, drama, romance, etc) all in one novel while also providing an in-depth look into our juvenile justice system. Spectacular work!

An all Nighter

This story kept me hanging on right through till the end. I loved the way Turpin told the story, she brought it to life and I felt I was right there beside her. Turpin is so talented in how she portrayed each character. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I recommend it as a great read.

Great book, interesting accents

The book was one of the best ones I’ve listened to in awhile. The accents were the same for two of the characters who had very different backgrounds, so that made it difficult to follow at times.

Allegedly

Wow! Great story, Great narrator! I cried, laughed, got angry! Which is what a good book is supposed too do, right? My only issue was the ending although I do understand "why" I just feel if it had went a little differently this good book would've been GREAT! I just needed some redemption in the end. Other than that totally worth a credit!
