Story
Epictetus, a Greek stoic and freed slave, ran a thriving philosophy school in Nicropolis in the early second century AD. His animated discussions were celebrated for their rhetorical wizardry and were written down by Arrian, his most famous pupil. Together with the Enchiridion, a manual of his main ideas, and the fragments collected here, The Discourses argue that happiness lies in learning to perceive exactly what is in our power to change and what is not, and in embracing our fate to live in harmony with god and nature.

Story
As former tutor and adviser to Emperor Nero, philosopher and statesman Seneca was acutely aware of how short life can be - his own life was cut short when the emperor ordered him to commit suicide (for alleged involvement in a conspiracy). And Seneca proved true to his words - his lifelong avowal to Stoicism enabled him to conduct himself with dignity to the end. During his rich and busy life, Seneca wrote a series of essays that have advised and enriched the lives of generations down to the present day.

Epictetus (c. AD 50-135) was a former Roman slave (he was also lame in one leg, and walked with a crutch) who went on to become a great teacher. His philosophy, Stoicism, was practical, not theoretical - aimed at relieving human suffering here and now. The Manual is a collection of Epictetus' essential teachings and pithy sayings, compiled by one of his students.

Story
Almost every religion, spiritual practice, philosophy and person grapples with fear. The most repeated phrase in the Bible is “Be not afraid.” The ancient Greeks spoke of phobos, panic and terror. It is natural to feel fear, the Stoics believed, but it cannot rule you. Courage, then, is the ability to rise above fear, to do what’s right, to do what’s needed, to do what is true. And so it rests at the heart of the works of Marcus Aurelius, Aristotle, and CS Lewis, alongside temperance, justice, and wisdom.

Publisher's summary
This Stoicism audiobook collection contains three of the most influential Stoic pieces. Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, and Epictetus helped to shape Stoicism with their writings of "Meditations", "On the Shortness of Life", and "Enchiridion".
In his personal writings of "Meditations", Marcus Aurelius records private notes to himself as a source for his own guidance and self-improvement. "On the Shortness of Life" by Seneca is a moral essay in which Seneca brings up many Stoic principles on the nature of time, namely that people waste much of it in meaningless pursuits. According to the essay, nature gives people enough time to do what is important, and the individual must allot it properly. In general, time is best used by living in the present moment in pursuit of the intentional, purposeful life. Finally, "Enchiridion" by Epictetus is a short manual of Stoic ethical advice and an excellent summary of Stoic principles. The narration of this Stoicism collection is great for anyone interested in Stoicism and is narrated brilliantly by Johnathan Waters.

The ancient Toltecs believed that life, as we perceive it, is a dream. We each live in our own personal dream, and these come together to form the dream of the planet, or the world in which we live. Problems arise when our perception of the dream becomes clouded with negativity, drama, and judgment (of ourselves and others), because it's in these moments of suffering that we have forgotten that we are the architects of our own reality and we have the power to change our dream if we choose.

Epictetus, a Greek stoic and freed slave, ran a thriving philosophy school in Nicropolis in the early second century AD. His animated discussions were celebrated for their rhetorical wizardry and were written down by Arrian, his most famous pupil. From his perspective in Renaissance Italy, Machiavelli's aim in this classic work was to resolve conflict with the ruling prince, Lorenzo de Medici. Machiavelli based his insights on the way people really are rather than an ideal of how they should be. This is the world's most famous master plan for seizing and holding power. Astonishing in its candor The Prince even today remains a disturbingly realistic and prophetic work on what it takes to be a prince, a king, or a president.

Dry, stilted, and thoroughly unenjoyable
The narrator dutifully reads the classic text, delivering an audio rendition completely devoid of emotion, style or interest. He even pronounces the passage numbers, disrupting any natural flow you might find in his robotic delivery.
It's as if the publisher doesn't understand the difference in experience between listening to an audiobook and reading a reference manual.
There's simply no reason to listen to this.

Good teachings and thoughts
Been a while since I delved into philosophy and this was a good book to get back into it. I haven't read much about Stoicism and have to say I really enjoyed it. This book is easy to listen to and I didn't find it as complex as some of the other philisophical books I have read. Really enjoyed Marcus Aurelius's thoughts. All three made for a great volume.
The narrator did a good job. Books like these can be dry and tough to listen to but his tone of voice and cadence was perfect and he made it very easy to listen to.

Excellent
An excellent collection on stoicism. And an exercise in patience. Loved it.

A Fine Collection of Ancient Thoughts
If you are a seeker of understanding and peace of might mind, I recommend this audiobook. If you merely wish to be mystified or intellectually stimulated, you may be disappointed. Stoicism as it is presented in this format is not meant to be entertaining or clever, nor is it meant to impress anyone. These are valuable lessons for patient listeners.
The narrator did a fine job.

Great narration
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
I very much enjoy the narrator's voice -- he sounds noble, even regal, and well-suited to the content of Stoic literature.
I'm particularly glad that this collection includes not only Meditations, but Seneca and Epictetus. It's a great value and an excellent addition to my library.
