Publisher's summary

We all want to feel happier, healthier, and richer.

For most of us, this not just for outward appearances, but for the benefit of our conscious self. Waking up every morning feeling content with life is something we all want to achieve.

But it’s not so easy to achieve this, as it can be difficult to feel this way with the noise and tempo of everyday life. Lagom can help us reach this state of harmony with oneself. The Swedish concept is used to describe the perfect state of balance.

In particular, lagom is when something is neither too much, nor too little.

It’s just right, and it makes you feel satisfied.

It can be used when talking about anything from the weather to how much milk you pour in your coffee. It can also be used when tidying the house, or even shopping for groceries.

It leads to a more frugal style of decision making, helping you to avoid taking too much or too little.

The Swedish apply lagom to most aspects of their life without thinking about it.

If the question starts with "How much?" the typical answer in Sweden is "lagom."

The minimalist nature of lagom allows for a more functional mindset, focusing and surrounding yourself with what you perceive to be the more important things in life.

Living lagom is to live a moderate life where balance is the key to success in all areas.

This book will show you how lagom can be incorporated into your personal life, family, relationships, work, home, health, and wellbeing.

After listening to this audiobook, you will be equipped with the knowledge to:

  • Become happier with your work
  • Have healthier relationships
  • Improve your personal wellbeing

BALANCED LIFE IS GOOD!

I knew nothing of Lagom before listening to this audiobook - what a treat!
I tend to be gluttonous on occasion, and I learned more about and useful tips for living more "in moderation" and "minimally" - I really need that! A lot of the time you want things, but you don't really need things. I am excited to learn more about this!

Now that I'm (almost) 51, this is something I really need to practice and use in my life. I think this audiobook was informative, and enjoyable to listen to. Both author and narrator did a great job.

FIND BALANCE!
Loved it :)

Everything in moderation

A book about balance and moderation is the key to having a happy existence. I enjoy learning of different perspectives on ways of living one's life and finding a lot of similarities from many cultures around the world. This falls into some similar territory to Hygge or minimalism but has its own interesting things from its Swedish viewpoint on the concept. The book has some suggestions that I think anyone can take and try and implement into their lives to bring some more contentment to their lives. I thought the narration was overall good and Sarah DaMetz put forth everything clearly and with a solid delivery.

Perfect.

In American, we don't frown upon excess. For many, excess is an ideal: a massive house, tons of money, lots of cars.
It doesn't work though. Happiness doesn't seem to come from excess, and the pursuit of excess leads to stress and anxiety.
Our society is lacking balance, and we are becoming increasingly aware of it.
Living Lagom by Maya Thoresen offers a solution from Sweden: Lagom.
Lagom is a word with no direct translation into English. It's an idea which lives at the core of Swedish society. In one sense, in means take enough, leave the rest for everyone else. Rooted deep in Swedish culture, this aspect of Lagom dates back to days days of the Vikings, with a single communal horn of mead, passed around the fire, shared by all. Drink enough, and leave plenty for your friends to have enough, too. There are many different facets of Lagom, which is what makes the concept so much more than just the idea of having enough... There really is no single word or english phrase to define it.
This book offers a comprehensive explanation of what Lagom is and what it is not. There are lots of examples, anecdotes and advice on how to bring some lagom into your own life, and it really does sound appealing. I imagine many readers will find this book to be a solid, refreshing way to look at life. Do all things in moderation. Enjoy yourself. Enjoy life. Do, have, and be what makes you most happy, healthy, and content.
Solid, quality content, and excellent narration, I highly recommend this book.

how much should you have of everything in order...

do well enough instead of striving for perfection to have balance? think about what you want and need and what you have to do to achieve that balance"
this is exactly what this book is trying to teach you and rightly so! we are so caught up with what works for everyone else that we lose sight of what works for us.

Contentment and Moderation

Lagom basically comes down to being happy with what you have, and having things in moderation. How much is right? Enough is right. Not too much, not too little, and then being content with that.

The book goes through some basic skills on how you could incorporate the lagom lifestyle into your life. It's about balancing priorities between wants and needs. Don't throw yourself too much into one thing, take some 'down time' and so forth. Or if you are more anti-social generally then the balance would be making yourself be more outgoing to balance the two. Declutter, so that you are not overwhelmed by things, but it is not living minimalisticaly

But the final balance is different for each person, and you should not force people into the same balance levels that you require.

The inclusions is some recipes in here is a strange one. It's kind of good to have some traditional Swedish recipes available, but they don't actually matter for 'living lagom'. They are there to add a little bit more 'swedish' to the book and bulk it out, but they are completely off topic for the 'balance lifestyle of lagom' discussion.

Narration by Sarah DaMetz is good. Engaging, well paced and easy to follow. no issues at all.
