Publisher's summary

My name is Callie Penrose - and I'm a rookie spell-slinger from Kansas City. I work part-time for the Vatican Shepherds, hunting monsters for them, but you won't find me in the pews on Sundays. Not really my thing.

But when my boss is injured by a werewolf, it's time for me to put my big girl pants on. Because the Spear of Longinus - the one that allegedly stabbed Jesus on the Cross - has surfaced, and it's going up for auction. And every flavor of monster in my city wants it. Even a demon and a Nephilim, just for fun.

The only way to survive the war and get the spear first is to team up with Nate Temple, a handsome, reckless wizard from St. Louis. But he has a dark side, too, and I don't fully trust him, despite what my body tells me.

Framed for murders I didn't commit, I find I've become Kansas City's most hated wizard overnight. Because keeping the spear will get me killed, but giving it away will get everyone else killed. And letting Nate handle it will only paint me as weak. What's a girl to do?

Especially when Hell knows more about my past than I do...

Interesting premise, fun listen

There really is a fair amount of background noise in the recording, and although it didn’t ruin the book for me, it’s distracting. I’ll still get the next. I’m interested to see where it goes.

Interesting introduction.

The characters are ok.
It is difficult to review without knowing what parts of the story are going to be developed or explained.
.
It is based on a very shallow horror movie version of Christian mythology.
I am ok with that, but mythology nerds will probably be upset.

Wow

I always gravitate toward paranormal reads/listens especially when narrated by Nicole Poole. She always does a phenomenal job no matter the content.

Unchained is a mix of all supernatural beings and worlds and absolutely blew me away. I can’t wait to dive into the rest of this series.

Difficulty Staying Connected

I am not sure what happened. The story started and I was interested but then I had a hard time staying connected. My mind wanted to wander instead of focus. Have you ever had someone tell you about the dream they had...it starts off interesting, kind of exciting, there's potential. But, as the person continues it gets convoluted and you start to feel lost, no longer interested, don't care and doesn't make sense. Kind of like you had to be there. You know that person totally gets but because you didn't experience it for yourself you kind of just shrug and are glad when the conversation changes subjects. That is this for me. I don't know if it is the writing g style and what the author chose to focus on such as a bunch of details. It seemed like the focus was on arbitrary things regarding the main character. I like a broader perspective and more story and character development. Sometimes first person can be superficial and lack dimension and this did for me.

Fun and engaging. While still entertaining the questions of good and evil

This irreverent, funny (except when it is most appropriate to be serious) novel has it all. A spitfire heroine, her sidekick, her mentor, and a smartass bad boy. Joseph Campbell is grinning, seeing the Hero’s Journey reinvented.

The novel does all this while entertaining the questions of religion, relationships, and good vs evil.

A+ recommended. Not high literature, but not mere brain candy either, _Unchained_ definitely leaves the listener/reader wanting more.

Great book

This book is different than all the other angel books, that I have read anyway. I really did enjoy this book 😇

The narrator was Perfect!

Not a bad story if you get the 3 book set

I do wish I saw the three book sets before I got this specific one (but I did get two three book sets, it was still cheaper then buying the other two books in the first set separately).

A tale of a female protagonist who doesn't know who she is, working for the church and mouthy as hell. Honestly it is pretty mundane for urban fantasy (not a complaint, I am writing a book that isn't really any different either).

While filled with some cliches, and not the most fresh take it is interesting. The characters are good (I like Callie), the storyline is interesting enough. There is something extra that I can't quite point out (which is why I bought the next five books, they come in three book sets for the first six books).

It is a good read, goes pretty quickly but don't expect something revolutionary. Its like an American Diner experience, it doesn't surprise, but it does hit the notes you want and leaves you full.

Enjoyable read

I enjoyed the book and the strong female lead. My only complaint is I still have questions on some aspects that were not explained. So maybe this just means I need to read book two? The narrator is great and embodies the character in her voice well.

Relaxing, cute

This is a fun story that was just what I needed after an intense book. Lots of action with a couple of twists at the end. Fun characters. (I don’t understand why perfectly capable authors have such trouble knowing when to use ‘further’ vs ‘farther’ though.)
