Publisher's Summary

My name is Callie Penrose - and I'm a rookie spell-slinger from Kansas City. I work part-time for the Vatican Shepherds, hunting monsters for them, but you won't find me in the pews on Sundays. Not really my thing.

But when my boss is injured by a werewolf, it's time for me to put my big girl pants on. Because the Spear of Longinus - the one that allegedly stabbed Jesus on the Cross - has surfaced, and it's going up for auction. And every flavor of monster in my city wants it. Even a demon and a Nephilim, just for fun.

The only way to survive the war and get the spear first is to team up with Nate Temple, a handsome, reckless wizard from St. Louis. But he has a dark side, too, and I don't fully trust him, despite what my body tells me.

Framed for murders I didn't commit, I find I've become Kansas City's most hated wizard overnight. Because keeping the spear will get me killed, but giving it away will get everyone else killed. And letting Nate handle it will only paint me as weak. What's a girl to do?

Especially when Hell knows more about my past than I do...

great book dull reader

Narrator spoke as if the book was a race to finsh. could hear many noises in the backgroud making her even harder to follow and enjoy. the book itself is amazing and just needs to be rerecorded with a sound studio and a better narrator.

Background noise too distracting

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would recommend this book because Shayne Silvers is a great author.

What three words best describe Linnea Sage’s performance?

Her performances was good. She portrayed each character very well. The background noise was awful. It sounds like a TV playing, and you can hear car horns and sirens throughout the book.

Wanted to love it but ........meh

Let me start off by saying that Shayne's Nate Temple series is one of my favorites of all time! This is an expansion on that same universe, so....... I had big hopes! It unfortunately fell far short.

The narration was terrible! I have to agree with a previous review that Callie sounds like a winy teenager most of the time (not solely the narrators fault). Also the recording quality was horrendous!! I could here car alarms, sirens, etc in the background. Sounded like it was recorded in a bedroom on a busy street! I strongly recommend a new voice for Cali!

Secondly, this is just my preference. The internal monologue was very difficult to listen to. Again, sounded like an angsty teen rather that a B.A. woman in her mid twenties. IF the writing of the next book is more inline with how she is portrayed in the Temple series, I'll give it a go.

SO much potential..........just hope it can be turned around!!

need to work on the use of emotion in your words

need to learn propper times to start with emotions in your voice and also use the propped emotions when needed.

The reading is rushed

What made the experience of listening to Unchained the most enjoyable?

I love the Temple stories and these are part of that universe. The only downside for me was the narration. She seems rushed. Not the intolerable paces that some readers have given, especially in dangerous situations, but she comes across as if she is afraid to take up too much of someone's time by speaking too slowly. I get accused of this myself when I tell a longer story...don't want to waste anyone's time. She also sound a bit 'young', childlike in her representation. That isn't such an issue since she is 'young' in her experiences with dangerous situations and using her magic in the real world. Hopefully future stories will show her slowing down just a bit which would add a bit of gravity to her character. Her voice is pleasant, although a bit too upbeat much of the time when speaking of more grave or thought provoking conversations. I think it would help with the other characterizations if she slowed a bit also. Slowing the speed down a bit drags more than is tolerable, so it's on the narrator to work it out. It won't stop me from listening to the next two books that I've already picked up :)
