Everything was going fine for Quinn…until she accidentally stole from Nate Temple.

She knows how to drink, fight, and steal dangerous magical artifacts - but not for money. For favors. Because all her life she’s wanted only one thing - a secret so dangerous and well-guarded that no one will give it up.

A ticket to the Land of the Fae so she can find her dad and finally get some answers about her past.

So she doesn’t ask questions of her clients, only favors, hoping that they will eventually add up to get her what she so desperately desires. And with her unique ability to nullify magic, the world’s deadliest artifacts - or the clients who demand them - don’t really impress her very much.

But that all changes when she accidentally robs the infamous Nate Temple, and finds herself in a much deeper world of monsters and conspiracies than she ever knew existed. Because Nate Temple and his friends aren’t the only things to be afraid of.

Now she has to worry about his enemies, too....

Fun adventure with an Irish accent

Amanda Leigh Cobb was the only reason I’ve decided to buy this book. She’s my favorite narrator so I’ve decided to give this a try even if I thought I wouldn’t enjoy the plot or the characters. Let me tell you that it was fun, I didn’t regret it and now I’m on a second book. It was a fast paced adventure with an interesting main character. Not so much for a plot there but I suspected what I was going into. If it wasn’t for a narrator i would probably stop at the first book, so I’m glad that I’m listening, because for me it’s like a radio theatre with Amanda’s abilities to change voices and accents))

Hooked on Quinn

Absolutely love the witty banter and the accent. But where is the rest of the series? Really disappointed I won't be able to listen to the rest of the series after such a great start. Wish I hadn't started this series since I can't finish it.

Flat and Dull

I've never read any of the books set in this universe before. However, as this is the start of a new series, I feel like it should still be accessible to new readers.

Unfortunately, the world building and character development leave a lot to be desired. I barely have any sense of the main character's emotions or background or personality or world, and I'm at the climax of the story.

I think this might be due to massive amounts of telling vs. showing. It's honestly hard to pinpoint because I was so bored during the story that my mind wandered.

We get told about the main character's relationship with her aunt, but not shown. We get told about the past history with Jimmy, but not shown. We get told about Ryan's background, but not shown. I mean, seriously, there's just massive amounts of summary and heavy-handed plot device. And not a whole lot actually goes on in the present–everything tying these people together happens off-screen, so to speak.

For this reason, the relationships come across as superficial. There's no real sense of connection between the characters, and no real distinction between any of them. Jimmy and Ryan are both bland and forgettable.

All in all, I did not like it. DNF at about 95%.

best Irish voice yet!

the reading is fantastic! the story is worthy a good read. being boston Irish character, I get the language..... but it also makes it unfit for me to share with my kiddos who enjoy Shayne Silvers stuff with me in most cases. that's the only reason my overall isnt 5 stars

Whiskey Ginger is book 1 in the Phantom Queen Diaries. It is an Urban Fantasy set in Boston, Massachusetts. It was a slow start to the book and I was about to DNF it until about 40 minutes in when it started to get interesting. It wasn’t my favorite book, but I think it piqued my interest enough that I may be interested in checking out the second book in the series and giving that a try.

Some of the things that didn’t work for me were the tell, not show, writing style. We don’t see anything that would show us why [hang on I forgot her name and have to go look] Quinn feels strongly about Jimmy or even her aunt who raised her. We are told they grew up together but we don’t see interactions that lead us to believe she has an emotional bond with either of them. She does hook up with Jimmy but again it was just physical and no emotions were shown surrounding it. There is no character development. The Irish accent and vernacular bothered me too. It wasn’t believable and seems like the author did it solely to create interest with her and make her unique. It was dumb though because she supposedly got the accent from being raised by her Irish aunt, but she was raised in Boston, in the United States. She went to school with the rest of the Americans, she had friends, teachers, etc all who speak American English, yet she says “ye” for “you” and other things that don’t make sense for her to say. If she was partially raised in Ireland and spent her childhood there, it would make a little more sense, but she never even visited Ireland. There were some scenes that didn’t make sense too. We are told that her aunt is so important to her but then when she is kidnapped, Quinn spends the evening hooking up with Jimmy instead of worrying or doing something about it. The hooking up was done off page.

There were some imaginative things and while this book was mediocre for me, it definitely set the ground work and opened up the possibility for book two being even better. I liked the variety of supernatural and fae beings. Even though he wasn’t in a lot of the book, my favorite character was Dobby. I want to know more about him, and the fact that he is in book two makes it more enticing. This is the first book I have read by this author. I will give him one more try. Idk when I will listen to book two, but I will keep it on my list for when I see it in an audible sale.

The narration was good. I can’t blame the narrator for how incredibly annoying I found the main character’s unnecessary Irish accent.

Overall, I will give this book 3 stars.

Perfect Narrator

I struggled reading whiskey Ginger. Someone suggested I try the audible. The narrator makes Quinn come to life. I enjoyed every chapter and all the action. I am an avid reader but I love audible too. Some stories just translate better in audio. I can't wait to listen to the next one.

awesome

absolutely love this author, she gives Quinn this fantastic English accent but pulls it back for the other characters, which my sure is not easy to do but she pulls it off. I love this character and the narrator who portrayed her

Lost interest

I do enjoy a good urban fantasy. This had so much potential. I can suspend my disbelief, but had a hard time doing so much of that with this one.

The narration was fun.

The story had far too many inconsistencies and contradictions for me to be able to fully enjoy. I won’t post spoilers by listing much here.

The accent was fun and cool, but felt that was the whole point. I had an incredibly difficult time going along with the idea that someone who was born and raised in south Boston, and wasn’t fully submerged in an entire neighborhood and support group of full-on off-the-boat Irish friends/family... going as far as saying “YEE” instead of any variation of “you” in every single opportunity. She’s like 30yo. Had one “parent.” Grew up attending catholic school and finished public school. Sure, she didn’t have a lot of friends, but knew & had to interact with the kids and nuns growing up, and even goes out to bars and whatnot as an adult... Yet she had literally zero of her accent worn away over that time? And even though her accent is Irish from her Irish “aunt,” her swearing is very much American.

It just felt like the accent was thrown in for “some cool feature” for the main character to have. And then add the random “name drops” from time to time (aka, very brief pop culture references out of nowhere)... the whole thing just felt like a great idea initially that was thrown together, and added a few splashes of things to make it “cool” or nostalgic for a certain age group, but fell flat.

Not interested in reading/listening to more from this series at this time. Might give one more book a chance later on down the road.

I really liked it. Good urban fantasy book.

Well written story, with great narration. This was my first Shayne Silver's book, as well as Cameron O'Connell. I enjoyed the story, and was very much pleased with the quality narration. I look forward to finding more books by these authors, and Narrator. Especially for this particular series.
