Publisher's Summary

When 17-year-old Kai is exposed as a female sorceress, a moonburner, she knows the punishment is death. Despite the odds against her, Kai escapes her fate and undertakes a harrowing journey to a land where moonburners are revered and trained as warriors.

But the moonburner citadel is not the place of refuge and learning that Kai imagined. The ongoing war against the male sorcerers, or sunburners, has led the citadel leadership down a dark path that could spell the end of all magic. Armed with a secret from her past and a handsome but dangerous ally in the sunburner prince, Kai may be the only one able to prevent the destruction of her people.

Excellent!!

This book absolutely blew me away! I did not expect to love this as much as I did.

I think the thing I loved about it the most was the world building. We have Moonburners and Sunburners, two factions who are constantly at war with each other. Our MC, Kai, is a Moonburner who has to hide herself as a boy because she lives with the Sunburners. Her parents knew that if they didn't hide her powers then she would be killed as a young girl. They tried to disguise them for as long as they could, but during an attack on their village, Kai is unmasked. She is exiled and left to rot in the desert, her father is killed and her mother is sent as a slave to a man who has always desired her. Kai has to find the will to survive and find her way to other moonburners, what follows is an extraordinary journey, one filled with lies, deception, secrets and so much more!!! Absolutely everything about the world building was phenomenal! The author has created a magical world that will immediately grab you and not let go.

The characters were amazing as well. Each were well written and developed and you can't help but root for them. Kai grew so much during the course of the book and I loved seeing that growth. She had so much to contend with and it was so nice to see her reach her full potential. I can't wait to read more in this world and of these characters! I also loved her seishen, Quitsu. He rocked!!

In all, this was a refreshing read. I think I was getting jaded with the amount of books that all felt the same, so after reading this unique and captivating read, it's restored my faith in YA. I love finding little gems like this and can't recommend it enough! I need book 2!!!

The narrator did an amazing job with Kai. She really got her and really brought her to life. I've listened to other books by this narrator, though not enough!! I will definitely check out more by her.

I received this for free via Audiobook boom. This in no way affected or influenced my thoughts.

Ying and Yang

TARGET AUDIENCE: Young adult, however appropriate for all ages. I was really drawn into this story from the beginning. I was immediately intrigued by the premise. Enough young romance to keep you engaged, but not overdone.

PROFANITY AND SEX: None, thank you. Appropriate for readers of all ages. I would be happy for my teenage or pre-teen children to read or listen to this book.

NARRATOR: I felt that the narrator did a great job at bringing this book to life. I was never lost, or confused as I listened to the book.

OVERALL: Lots of twists and turns, not another “canned” YA romance. I listened to this book in one sitting during a trip and loved it.

Nothing about this story I didn't love!

Awesome story! Kai is born into a society where girls who are Moonburners are killed at birth by the king of the Sunburners. Her parent’s manage to hide her out by pretending she’s a boy. That lasts until she’s 17 then it’s discovered she’s a Moonburner and her family is sentenced. Kai’s sent to the desert where she wanders one step away from death. While there her magical animal finds her. These animals are only for people of great power and importance which is discovered later in the story.
I loved the animals attached to the burners. It’s a nice touch. The story has an easy flow and even though I’d figured it out within the first few chapters I continued listening. I don’t usually do that but this story drew me in even though I wasn’t surprised by its events. That’s a huge plus for me.
The narrator Emma Lysy’s performance is excellent and fitting to the story and Kai’s character. There wasn’t anything about this story I didn’t love.

I received this book free from the author through audiobook boom.

Amazing

What did you love best about Moonburner?

The main character. A hero with issues and a sense of humor, how can you not love her????

What was one of the most memorable moments of Moonburner?

Surprisingly, the ending.

Have you listened to any of Emma Lysy’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Have not listened to any.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Get your burn on.

Any additional comments?

I almost had VERY BAD feelings towards this author... until I found she had completed the prequel. So many questions... But now, I have a tickedfiness (new word alert), because I want to know what happened... after they served the cake...

Wow!

This story grips you from the beginning to the end every moment is amazing. The characters seem very real and full of life. Feels like there should be yet another book in this and I hope there is. I highly enjoyed this book and glad I was able to listen to this. The narrator did an amazing job as well.

Fun YA fantasy

I really enjoyed this book! It was well balanced and I loved the female characters-both good and bad. I am pretty picky about narrators and I liked this one for the most part. Her "male" character voices weren't amazing but they could have been much worse. I would definitely recommend this to fantasy lovers.

Moonburner

If you could sum up Moonburner in three words, what would they be?

captivating, interesting,

What aspect of Emma Lysy’s performance would you have changed?

I would like to hear a little more animation to her voice...at times it was very monotone & ALMOST made you want to turn it off.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

it might have been better if I could've sat down all in one sitting because I sometimes got lost & had to rewind! lol

Any additional comments?

overall...it was a good book...I failed to realize there was book before this so I will be reading it backwards, but look forward to reading it...when does the next one come out? I can't wait.

YA done well

I thought the story was YA done well. Plus I'm a fan of dragons. Usually I'm not a fan of stories that revolve around female suppression, but if you disregard it and look at it as a story, it was enjoyable.

I enjoyed the narrator. She controls her inflection well to differentiate thoughts vs narration vs speaking.

Fresh Take on YA Fantasy

I thought this was a great first novel by Claire Luana. This magical story pulled me in from the beginning, and I couldn't wait to hear what happened next. The main character, Kai, is a moonburner, who has to hide the fact the she is female for

I thought the narration was great, however the quality of the recoding sounded like it was recorded in a barrel or something, but this did not distract me too much when I was listening to the story. I would definitely listen to another audiobook that was narrated by Emma Lysy. Give this book a chance. :)
