Publisher's summary
From New York Times best-selling author, CD Reiss, comes an all new, sexy tale of secrets, intrigue, betrayal, and a love worth crossing a continent for.
Taylor Harden is a man on the edge.
The edge of fame. The edge of untold wealth.
The edge of utter humiliation.
He built an unhackable system, and in front of everyone, it gets hacked.
His reputation goes from king to goat in a split second. Boom. Like that.
Some dude in Barrington, USA (AKA Nowhere) has locked down Taylor's code, and if he does not get it back, he is going to be wearing a monkey suit for the rest of his life.
Except, this guy? This hacker from Nowhere? He is not a guy.
Harper Watson is all woman. And she has a plan for Taylor, his code, and his body.

Everything about 15-year-old Cat's new town in rural Michigan is lonely and off-kilter until she meets her neighbor, the manic, beautiful, pill-popping Marlena. Cat, inexperienced and desperate for connection, is quickly lured into Marlena's orbit by little more than an arched eyebrow and a shake of white-blond hair. As the two girls turn the untamed landscape of their desolate small town into a kind of playground, Cat catalogues a litany of firsts - first drink, first cigarette, first kiss - while Marlena's habits harden and calcify.

Magnificent, thrilling and so erotic. Christian was brilliant as always. I would have loved a dual narration with him and Jo Raylan as Harper.

What. A. Book!
First, I have to praise the narration. Christian Fox was just perfect. Young enough to come across like our "hero" and "heroine" and easy going enough to talk both seriously and dirty without an ounce of smarmy or sarcasm.
I have listened to just 1 Reiss book before: Bombshell. I liked it... and enough to give this one a try. And, wow. Just wow. I bow at the altar of the author, because it takes a lot of courage and focus and imagination to, as a female, write from a male POV and write something so unique, different, and memorable. Once this book was done, I had one word for it. Staccato.
Definition of Staccato: with each sound or note sharply detached or separated from the others.
"a staccato rhythm"
Brava, CD Reiss.

The narration and audio production was perfect!
Would you listen to King of Code again? Why?
The story dragged and it was a slow paced listen.
If you’ve listened to books by CD Reiss before, how does this one compare?
Aside from the narration, story wise, this is not your typical "fluffy" romance. Most readers that might know C.D. Reiss should know to expect the unexpected. I think, after some time to analyze, this story is very well told, meticulous in matter of details and brought to life a world that you just want to know more of. That being said I can't say that Taylor & Harper, as a couple, really sucked me in as other couple's written by C.D. Reiss. I wanted to love them and I wanted to just be enveloped in their game, but to me, it was more about the game itself than them in becoming a unit. Harper always seemed three steps ahead and in her head. I saw how Taylor wanted to be able to get inside of her and I felt she always kept him at a distance. For some reason I expected more of the cat & mouse game of some sort. I expected more of the cyber back & forward but the story just revolved so much around the town, it's demise and it's effect on its people that it threw me off and my interest waned. Again, I am not saying I didn't like it, but compared to other CD Reiss stories I've experienced I found myself dragging to finish. I was so pumped and so looking forward to another WTF story that left me wanting more but can't seem to get myself there with this one. It kills me! I might do a re-listen just to see if it is a one time fluke.
Any additional comments?
I went through this book via audio. I will start by saying that the narration, production and the detail going into bringing this book to life was amazing, quite a surprise and very enjoyable. I think that a major "phantom character" is the town of Barrington USA. There is so much motivation, loss, pain, desolation and the effect of that town is deeply engraved in so many of these characters. You get why Harper is how she is.
Mr. Fox really outdid himself with this narration!! It did not feel like someone was just reading a book, it felt like an audio play. Very interactive and it made the process of finishing this book worth the slow pace.

Technically brilliant.
I don't know if all this could happen, but this computer hacking stuff is complicated... CD you almost made it make sense to me... so it's still confusing to me, but this story is fabulous.
Christian Fox make this real! What a sexy voice! The echoes when reciting code , were a cool effect. Lots of cute moments, hot sex, and I love the touch of the "Ken doll" guy... this book leads to another, but Harper and Taylor's story is at a happy point, hope their story is updated in the next book.

Fantastic Story
This novel has all the right elements. Ambition, mystery, sex and a good love story. Top it off with excellent writing, it's a masterpiece.
Christian Fox is always amazing, but this book was a perfect pairing for his narration.
This book is very hot. If steamy and voracious sex in a book is not your style, this book may burn your ears.
Needless to say, I had a great time listening to this book.

Atmospheric. Wow, wow, wow!
I confess, when I saw this was narrated by Christian Fox, I didn’t hesitate to buy. He is the only narrator here as the entire story is written from the hero Taylor’s point of view. Christian Fox’s performance is excellent, of course.
When it comes to technology, I am an ignoramus - not really a computer science and mathematical brain. However, it was so well written, the tech side of the story intrigued me.
During the entire reading, the story felt like a 1940s mystery novel especially with the cello music that separated the chapters – it was atmospheric and the voice seductive all at once. Especially in light of the subject matter of the hero being outwitted by the heroine, Harper’s actions. What a warrior she is.
I enjoyed how the love story built up and crept up on me while the intrigue took centre stage. Then the love took centre stage duelling with a new challenge. My heart pounded from start to finish with this book. I loved everything about it.

Sound Effects Unnecessary
I enjoyed the unique storyline and the narrators voice However, including sound effects is completely unnecessary, distracting and annoying. The words should be strong enough to stand in their own - dont try to dress them up.

Didn’t like Harper
I made myself to finish this book because I wanted to know how it ended and I liked Taylor. However, Harper is one of the least likable female leads I have come across. She is manipulative, rude and arrogant. I suspect the author wanted to write into her the strong alpha male characteristics that are so often loved in male leads, but for me it didn’t work. At no time did I think she was a good match for Taylor. I didn’t like her all that much and I sort of hoped he left her. Did she ever adequately explain why she hacked him? Did she ever convince us that Taylor should save her town? The answer to both questions is No.
Secondly, the cello music was weird and didn’t add a thing to the performance. I could have done without it.
Third, I realize that with the printed book, the long sequences of numbers would be easy to skip over. In an audio book, reading out a 20 character number-letter combo with a distortion effect on the audio track was just strange. Since this happened multiple times in the story it became distractive and pulled me away from the story. The number itself is meaningless to the listener. I say abridge it and read it as “a complex code of letters and numbers” to keep the attention of the listener.
All in all I would give this 3.5 stars.
