Editorial reviews

In the New Species series a pharmaceutical company has genetically mixed beast DNA and man DNA with sexy results. In Brawn, the fifth book of the series, one of the muscular creations is sent to live with Becca. Her father, the leader of the human task force rescuing and working with the New Species, forbids her from interacting with him. Things heat up, though, when Brawn and Becca are kidnapped by a lab looking to breed more of Brawn’s kind. With sultry and impassioned voice Vanessa Chambers performs this mix of science fiction, action, and sensual romance that will perk the animal instincts of any warm-blooded listener.

Publisher's summary

Book 5 in the New Species series.

One look at Brawn, and Becca is wondering how he’d look without his clothes. He’s also instantly attracted to her, but has sworn never to touch a human female. They just aren’t sturdy enough for the type of rough sex Brawn enjoys most. When he learns he’ll be living under the same roof with Becca, Brawn simply sees it as a chance to broaden his knowledge of humans. Hopefully he can do so while keeping his hands off her.…

His good intentions go astray when they’re both kidnapped and locked together in a cage. Brawn finds himself reliving a nightmare when he’s once again subjected to breeding experiments at the hands of New Species’ enemies - who will use Becca to get what they want. Brawn and Becca will have to depend on each other if they hope to survive.

Listener Advisory: While each New Species book is a standalone, the greatest enjoyment will come from reading them in series order.

Excellent

This is another great book by the author Laurann Dohner. Her writing draws you in makes you look forward to the next word. I have read and reread the four before and I plan to reread Brawn. I was so excited for the next words, I want to be sure I didn't miss a thing. The narrator is excellent, she gives voice to every character, they all have their own identity. I enjoyed all of the characters in the book. I like the way previous characters make appearances in each book, it takes nothing away from stars of the book, it doesn't just say this is a family, it shows it through each book, which in turn makes you feel apart of every scene. I believe a good sign off great writer makes their reader feel as though they are a part of every book you read. That is what I get from Ms Dohner's books.

Another great one!

Have you listened to any of Vanessa Chambers’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

The narrator is the reason that I have purchased every audio book in this series. The story is good but the narrator Vanessa Chambers makes this book a thousand times better!!! A narrator can totally kill a book and this is an example where the narrator just makes this book AMAZING!!! Great Job

Very good continuation of the series :D

4 stars

This was a very good story. I liked both Becca and Brawn and enjoyed their story. I'm really liking this series and am planning to continue with it.

Becca is the daughter of Tim, the leader of the human task force that works with the NSO (the New Species Organization). She's a widow and lives alone in a house that she inherited from her grandfather, which happens to be on the same land as her Father's house. When Tim has a NS male coming to stay with him as a new member of the team, Tim tries to give him Becca's house (telling her to move in with him) but Becca's not about to be chased out of her house or let her Father order her around. As a result, she stays in her house but lets the NS male, Brawn, stay in her guest bedroom.

Brawn is a member of the NS council and agreed to help out the human task force that's been working on retrieving NS people that are still captives in secret labs and such. When he arrived at the place he's to stay, he finds himself confronted with a small, human female that he's strongly attracted to, regardless of the fact that he never thought he'd want a human female (thinking they're too delicate and soft). He resolves to try to do his job without giving in to temptation.

Brawn and Becca have issues almost immediately. The first night Brawn spends in Becca's house, they're attacked by a team of men that manage to drug Brawn and take them both captive. They take Becca because they believe she's his girlfriend and want to use her to control him and for some procedures they're doing. While they're held captive, Brawn and Becca both start to have deeper feelings for each other. They become closer and even come together once during their captivity. They both want more with the other and worries that the way they're being held captive might cause problems for them being together later. Unfortunately, they don't get much of a chance to talk things out as every time either Becca or Brawn seems about to say something helpful, they get interrupted. Becca and Brawn end up rescued before they've worked things out between them and an unwarranted intervention ends up keeping them apart after the rescue.

Becca and Brawn both end up heart-broken and thinking the other doesn't want them. Brawn tries to live his life. Becca goes off to hide in a cabin and get away from everyone due to an unforeseen circumstance that comes from her and Brawn's time together. Despite her reasons for hiding, she ends up at the Reserve (and NSO compound) against her will but for her own safety. Brawn finds out she's there and goes after her but Becca thinks he's only there because he feels guilty and not because he wants her. They end up going through some tough times as she believes he really wants an NS female and Brawn doesn't understand what is wrong and how to convince her to be with him. I guess when you grow up in a lab, relationship skills and understanding women aren't things you learn...poor Brawn. LOL. With a little help from some new friends, Becca does end up convinced of Brawn's feelings and agrees to be with him and they get a sweet HEA.

This was a very good story. I really liked Brawn and Becca and was so frustrated as they were trying to get past their mis-conceptions and issues, so I was very happy to see them work things out. I can't wait to read the next book in the series. I'd recommend this book. Thumbs up! :D

Love this series but this one frustrated me ....

If you could sum up Brawn in three words, what would they be?

I love this series the romance is great and it is "Them against the world" , But....This book frustrated me because it was focused to long on them not being together and arguing the same issue over and over and over again... Then finally in the last 2 chapters did they fall in love.... All the other books from this series I loved...

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Finally....

sexiest character award

Brawn is one of my favorite characters. But then who can resist a tall, exceptionally buff gorgeous man with midnight blue eyes and black hair to his ass? And let's not forget those canines..... and those special kitty skills.... YUM!!!!

Women were annoying as hell!!!

Becca was such an irritating and annoying brat. Ugh, she made me just want to skip this book. And Trisha needed to just mind her own can business, Brawn needed to go the hell off on her just for butting in so damn much!!!

Each Book is Uniquely New

Thank goodness each couple has very much their own love story. The series doesn’t get old. Dohner’s world building is strong so it’s easy to connect with her characters. I like this series but... I read the ebooks for the first three books in this series. Since I cannot read right now but want to finish the series, I’m listening to the audio version but I’m definitely not loving the narrator’s take on male voices.

Open your mouth...

This book was so cute and a great addition to the series!!! I'm so glad I found this series and stuck with it!!! (The first few books I didn't care for, but the author has gotten better with each book!!!).

My favorite part is when Braun told Becky to open her mouth the second time. It was super hilarious!!!

love the series

I have enjoyed all of Lauren's books... the only critique I would have is I would like to see more diversity in the ethnicity of the women in the books. Being a woman of color, we also enjoy and fantasize about the creativity utilized in these stories. It would be nice to hear about an African-American, Asian, Latino, or even biracial women used in your stories.
